I have some eeeeevil plans for this…!

14th Brooklyn11 Jul 2007 1:07 p.m. PST

Very interesting idea… I would love some dice with our clubs logo on them. Unfortunately the die we need more often is the d10… would be nice to be able to get this service for all kinds of dice! Any plans for that???

Cheers,

Burkhard

Something like "Stolen from Hawgleg"

Thieses11 Jul 2007 1:46 p.m. PST

I've seen dice like this before, but normally this is VERY expensive. EM4 has the right price based on quantity. Thanks for doing this.

I'd like some with "This Side Up"…

I was thinking of for my club… that would be cool.

darthfozzywig11 Jul 2007 2:15 p.m. PST

Since I usually only manage to roll '1's anyway, it's always nice to have a cute icon to look at.

Jana Wang11 Jul 2007 2:57 p.m. PST

I sat with some folks at Origins who'd had their last name put on theirs… pretty cool idea.

Very cool. And we don't worry about folks stealing our dice… we jest string 'em up! That tends to discourage 'em…

Do you also have all-blank dice, for completely custom dice?

Charles Marlow11 Jul 2007 3:24 p.m. PST

Neat.

Can I order some diice with nothing but box cars on them? In the BAR rules for SYW you need to roll lots of sixes, and I always manage to roll my fair share of snake eyes.

Contrarian11 Jul 2007 5:01 p.m. PST

14th Brooklyn: chessex.com and customdice.com offer similar services, and I think they both do non-d6 dice.

Contrarian11 Jul 2007 5:06 p.m. PST

Jeez, I just reread the story. It starts with "Until recently, if you wanted a custom design on dice, you'd be asked to take at least 1,000 and pay for special tooling."

Nothing like starting your press release with a big fat lie, is there? Chessex's minimum order for a single-custom-faced d6 is ten dice. They offered "same day" service at their Gen Con booth last year!

Frankly, em4 should be ashamed of themselves, both for lying, and for making me defend Chessex. I'm a Gamescience fan!

Ditto Tango 2 111 Jul 2007 5:35 p.m. PST

"lie" is a pretty strong word to use, don't you think? It implies wilfulness as opposed to simple ignorance/lack of research.

I don't know anything about em4, except occasionally I see interesting adverts and news articles like this. If Bill allows them advertize/make announcments, then I would think the enterprise can't be in the business of "lying".

I would challenge you to tell us that em4 knew about Chessex (I have no idea what a chessex is, either) and therefore wilfully distorted the truth.

Thanks in advance for your response.

psiloi11 Jul 2007 6:00 p.m. PST

Or it could be a simple advertising hyperbole. I doubt that they were pushing seriously that every previous order had to be bukly and expensive. Let's cut a little slack!

Contrarian11 Jul 2007 6:42 p.m. PST

"Simple hyperbole" is when you exagerate about your own product. When you say things about the market that simply are not true, that's a "lie," or "incredibly bad research."

Honestly, Tim, the first Google result for "custom dice" is Chessex.com, the second is CustomDice.com, and the fourth is for CrystalCaste.com (which has pricing similar to Chessex's). If em4 didn't know that one of the dice industry's biggest players offers custom dice and never did a Google search to check out the competition, they've progressed beyond deceit into simple idiocy. A company should never go into a market it hasn't haven't done basic research on.

A "didn't know" defense is tantamount to admitting they're morons. Which I admit is slightly better than being liars, but not by much.

RabidFox11 Jul 2007 6:48 p.m. PST

The idea that em4 would not keep track of competing companies like Chessex and Koplow & the policies they perform by is like saying Coke never keeps track of Pepsi and vice versa.
Completely ludicrous!

Now, is em4 lying in their statement?
No, if that was em4's policy before this change.
Can one read into it that they are speaking of other firms as well?
Yes, but they are specifically targeting no particular firm in their statement.
In can read however the reader wants.
Good business prose.

So Contrarion, you really do need to back off the throttle, just a bit and cool your jets!

All this huffing about a little ad about dice. Pure TMPers.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian11 Jul 2007 7:05 p.m. PST

Aren't you parsing the meaning of "recently" a bit too finely?

I assumed they meant that this is new technology in recent years.

I think that I will order a bunch of dice from the company simply to be contrarian. Wheesht!!

Ditto Tango 2 111 Jul 2007 9:17 p.m. PST

Thanks for your POV contarian. However, I personally still think you're a bit too extreme in your condemnation, especially when I read rabidfox's commentary.

PraetorianHistorian11 Jul 2007 10:17 p.m. PST

Take a pill Contrarian. Yeesh.

I really like this idea. I wonder if they could fit the cavalry silhouette from the game of Risk onto it?

"All this huffing about a little ad about dice. Pure TMPers."

I hate to have to agree, but this kind of comment is popping up more & more on TMP recently. For me, it's a hobby and maybe this will work for this company (great) or not (their worries). At least, they offer yet another product!

Heresy Miniatures12 Jul 2007 2:26 a.m. PST

@Contrarian:
In the UK, if you want custom dice, you go to dice'n'games, who supply EM4 with dice, and they ask you to buy 1,000 and pay for special tooling, per face.(I've investigated this option myself) So EM4 aren't lying, they just weren't aware of the other companies out there. Relax. And maybe think about muttering an apology if you feel big enough, the EM4 guys are good guys.

Doug em4miniatures12 Jul 2007 3:02 a.m. PST

That was fun..!

Thanks everyone for the comments (even the hasty, intemperate ones).

Doug, can I repeat Bill's question about having multiple custom faces?

Doug em4miniatures12 Jul 2007 6:08 a.m. PST

Doug, can I repeat Bill's question about having multiple custom faces?

Yes we can. I have a feeling, SpaceCudet, that you enquiring in regard to Command Decision? If you are, I have given one of your guys a more detailed answer. If I'm wrong, just ignore the last sentence..!

Are you stalking me? :-)

As my basement is still drying out from June's rain – no not a lot. :-(

There is actually a small gaming group of which I knew nothing about until a couple of years ago when a friend met one of them playing paintball. Unfortunately, I took an instant dislike to the guy so have never gamed with them.

What's the scene in Hereford?

Doug em4miniatures12 Jul 2007 8:38 a.m. PST

Careful – he's probably reading this..!

I've met one person in Bromyard which is north of Hereford (I'm south) and I met up for a game once with him a year or so ago. Otherwise – not a soul that I know of.

At first glance I thought, hmm can't think what I'd put on a dice to be honest, and then I scrolled down and saw the yellow and red one with the Robert the Bruce style lion on it and it all made sense!

What's the minimum order?

SpaceCudet12 Jul 2007 9:44 a.m. PST

I've met one person in Bromyard

My wife works in Bromyard, small world!

My main opponent currently lives in Belmont but he always comes to mine as he doesn't have any room ATM.

I used to play at the club in Gloucester but family commitments mean I can't make it any more.

TheMackster Fezian12 Jul 2007 11:06 a.m. PST

Emails exchanged with em4, now to convert some image files to "eps" format so they can reproduce them with their laser thingy. We want our little dragon icon as the "6" on some dice to hand out.
My first attempts to straight convert .gifs to 2-color .eps images were horrid failures. Have to redo them closer to "line art" images I think as the coloured images ruined themselves when converted.
…off to play with graphics.

eBob Miniatures12 Jul 2007 11:48 a.m. PST

You really need a vectored orignal – like from Coreldraw or Illustrator.
