It's great to see that the basic communication abilities of our vaunted Federal agaents are once again on display at such an exemplary level. Hey IM, I'm a Fed too, and I live in the place. If you had either the analytical skills or integrity to interpret or report on the "war-zone" data you refer to then you would concede that vast, vast majority of the violent crime that goes on in the city is black-on-black drug-trade activity that rarely spills over into the downtown areas proper. Folks in the Harbor and other touristy areas are actually safer than in most other cities of comparable size, but you already knew that, right G-Man? Of course if the facts run counter to your biases then the facts have to go. Pity. Sorry man, imho you have just given voice to the exact demo and mindset that Hexxenhammer has been alluding to. |

And that is what kills me the most. People who couldn't attend the con even if they wanted to because of finance reasons put the BCC down. Too funny. And IM, how many places in a large city have those areas that you don't go to? I'm sure every large and even some small cities have the same problem. Don't worry, if you or John ever want to come to Baltimore I'll have my 18 year old son walk you guys around. He has worked down by the BCC for over a year, and had no problems, nor have any of his friends. Keep spreading the hate, that's the ticket. |

Illumisar, Ok I get it, the black-on-black drug-trade crimes are A-OK as long as they don't bother you. All of my warrants are for black-on-black drug-trade crimes but we still investigate them and arrest them all the same, so I guess if it doesn't spill over into your neat little harbor area it's ok, good job brother! |

We were going to be near Bal. this summer and I was working on fixing the schedule so I could attend Historicon. For me crime was not a factor. And I can't understand why it would be. Since the con has moved, I will not be going. But, that is of no matter. But this:
Is just a big load of bull. |

Someone asked about GW. GW won't be running the tournaments/tables that they had planned to run in Baltimore. They have the manpower and the resources in Baltimore, but it's a bit different to shift that up to Philadelphia. |

Well, I'm a "cracker" from south Mississippi and wasn't going to Baltimore because of expense and concern about convenience for game masters. I live in a small town with plenty of dope addict white and black criminals. I go to New Orleans all the time so "Big City " crime is not a problem. Valley Forge sounds more convenient and cheaper. |
| Streitax | 22 Dec 2009 9:59 a.m. PST |
I would have gone to Baltimore, even looked forward to it. But I'm not putting on a game and don't have to deal with the logistics, which I appreciate can be a real problem. I'm just glad it's settled. Now if I can just get a room

This is fun from this side of the pond – like watching the fireworks on 'Guy Fawkes night' (US translation, '4th of July'):-) :-) You should all come to Salute instead – at least we only had panto-nazis a few years back
:-) And talking of the 'Rocket's red Glare', didn't the Brits in the US colony revolt against – er
the rest of the Brits to form the US? I didn't think anyone revolted against the Prussians
Seriously though, I wish I could come and I wish the show well, wherever it is: I know how hard a task it is running a big wargames show – just be thankful someone wants to do it, is all I can say: there's much less stressful ways to pass the time I can assure you. John T |

My wife and I lived in the Baltimore area for five years. We're really disappointed we won't be able to attend Historicon there, because we were looking forward to making it a long vacation in which we'd re-take in some of the great tourist attractions of the area – Annapolis, the Baltimore waterfront, all the wonderful museums in DC. Valley Forge is probably fine for the con itself, but it lacks the wider attractions, although spending some more time in Philly could be nice, too (a word of warning, though – Philly is a big city, too, and I think they even have some CRIME there). We'll have to re-examine attendance this year – maybe we'll go to 2011's Historicon, if it isn't plagued by similar drama . . . |

Wow, I just started reading about the reasons for moving from Baltimore were because of racist white wargamers.
My reasons for not going to Baltimore for Historicon had nothing to do with crime. More expensive hotels, parking stinks, no out-side pool to swim in (hey, Hexxenhammer, I don't even care who swims in the pool with me, how un-1950's that is of me) and no social activity with other gamers after the shows (too many hotels spread out). Do those reasons make me a, let me get this quote right, "afraid of anyone with skin darker than pasty white?". What a offensive statement. I am going to Baltimore this year with my family (oh, the horror) as we want to go to Camden Yards for a ball game, see a great aquarium and visit Fort McHenry. I just don't want to go there for a wargame convention. I could not have said it any better than John OFM said below: Because I hate Al Franken/Janeanne Garofalo/Al Sharpton (Dare I use the "L" word?) type snooty sneering superiority. Not ONCE in the ranting and lunatic ravings prior to this did race come up. NOT ONCE. Dragging race into this is nothing but poor loser condescension. Dragging in race is the last refuge of a scoundrel. It is the invariable last gasp of someone who is losing the argument, and badly. It makes the loser feel all morally superior. For the record, I have also never seen one single episode of "The Wire". |

IM – Owwww nice deflection there bro. I was responding to your implication that the city was unsafe ("warzone" and all that) and as such was an unsuitable location for decent, godfearin' types such as yourself (and your wimmin'folk . . . ) to travel to. Since you have no reasonable retort to being called out as being (we'll be generous here) factually-challenged, duplicitously-inclined, and socially-troglodytic, you do the "manly" thing and turn a factual challenge back on "the enemy" as a transparently fabricated, emotionally charged attack. Oh yawn. Don't you doltish, lead-pipe authoritarian types ever learn? Oh, right – that's the problem! For the record – the situation in the poorest neighborhoods of Baltimore, as in all major cities, is utterly deplorable and it is certainly not made any more "ok" by the fact that the worst of the violence occurs within these areas. |

Illumusar Here are some of those facts you want, and you don't even carry a badge or is IT a different sort of cop I haven't heard of. link Anyway your great city is above the average for the nation have fun!! Crime was only a small reason why I didn't want to go. My reasons for not wanting to go to Baltimore were distance, cost and a it would be pain to get in and out of the hotel I could care less about crime I carry my off duty weapon and my creds so crime is not an issue but others quickly pulled the race card so I voiced a comment. You can also try the Balitmore crime blogg that has a running report. You had 4 shootings and a stabbing on the 20th and some guy offereing to shovel snow forces his way into a home sexually assualts a woman, do you need more?? But since it doesn't happen were you live who cares right. |

I guess I have some culpability in the discussion going this direction due to my "Beirut" comment, but crime is always a factor for me. I'm a former marine, but I'm not phony brave enough to say that crime isn't a factor. I've worked with kids who came from baltimore and many major cities, heard their stories, helped some change and watched them grieve when they catch a glimpse at the pain they once caused living the gang lifestyle. Not all gang violence is a business action against each other, alot of young crime simply searches for a victim to get what they need, money, rep, whatever. Do I think anything would have happened to me had I gone to baltimore? I highly doubt it, but if the odds are greater I wouldn't ignore that as a father of four just wanting to have fun in my hobby. |
