OFM, The actual quote is "The nation that will insist upon drawing a broad line of demarcation between the fighting man and the thinking man is liable to find its fighting done by fools and its thinking done by cowards." And it is from William Francis Butler's 1889 biography of Charles "Chinese" Gordon (p. 85) and is nowhere in Thucydides… |

Yes, this particular quote is so very often wrongly attributed… even the House Armed Services Committee report on professional military education has it as Thucydides. I think it is one of those things where someone said it, it sounded really good, and so it had to attributed to some deep thinker like Thucydides. |
