"The Nation that makes a great distinction between its scholars and its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools."
-Thucydides

I am now reading Carlo d'Este's biography of Patton, by the way.

OFM,

The actual quote is "The nation that will insist upon drawing a broad line of demarcation between the fighting man and the thinking man is liable to find its fighting done by fools and its thinking done by cowards." And it is from William Francis Butler's 1889 biography of Charles "Chinese" Gordon (p. 85) and is nowhere in Thucydides…

Google lead me to Thucydides.
It's just as good a quote as the one that no one can ever find Edmund Burke saying about "All that is necessary for evil to triumph…"

Yes, this particular quote is so very often wrongly attributed… even the House Armed Services Committee report on professional military education has it as Thucydides. I think it is one of those things where someone said it, it sounded really good, and so it had to attributed to some deep thinker like Thucydides.

Has anyone figured out exactly what this product is? A booklet, a board wargame, a scenario book?

From Wikipedia:

A quotation frequently attributed to Thucydides on the Internet, but which is in fact spurious, is:

"The State that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting by fools."

So, I guess you win. grin
Still a good quote, though.

John,

I agree it is a still a good quote and while he is no Thucydides, Butler was still a distinguished officer and worth quoting…

There is also a free sample. He has one for all of his game lines. Go to wargamedownloads.com or wargamevault.com and look for Tanagra. The designer apparently is going to do a full range of battles.
