Very cool, I have the first releases of the first two books I will definitly be purchasing the 2nd Ed. when it's available.

Good luck guys, glad to see this one back around.

Anyone ever play this? Comments?

Yes, Units are divided into very simple types of armor and morale, they are further divided into 4-8 stands. Casuality system is very quick and very bloody, so is the morale system.

If you want rules that depict and give specific statistics for the difference between German and Gallic Warbands you probably aren't going to like these. But if you want to move large quantities of troops in a simple game that plays well and a barbarian warband boils down to a barbarian warband you will have fun with these.

This is an excellent Convention set of rules. Fast play easy to teach and learn and the bonus is they take home grown modifications reasonably well.

I'll dig up my copies again and write a little more detailed review later this week.

I'm all for simple rules. A review would be great. Thanks.

"Fistful only has one L."

A corp of pepel no that!

The original game had two L's, so the second edition does too. It's a brand label, not a word in a sentence ;)

This is definitely a game where you want to have lots and lots of stands of troops. Basing is not important so long as both sides are based the same.

All of what DRDHauser said applies. Because of the high bloodiness, you want to have lots of stands on the table and use the sound military practice of reserves…or you will lose.

Each phase of a turn is resolved by each player before the next phase begins.

Initiative-High roll decides to move first or second.
Charge-You may charge into combat. Missile fire may happen here with defensive and supporting fire.
Move. Other units move but may not move to contact.
Missile Any missile unit that is not in contact and has not shot yet may shoot now.
Melee Perform melees with all troops in contact.
Rally units.

Morale checks are taken at the end of any phase where combat has occured. (Charge, shoot and melee)

Combat is resolved by rolling an average die and adding modifiers to it. Modifiers are for armor and troop grade, weapon type, situation and the like. Cross index this with the number of stands in the unit on a damage table. the resulting number is the number of stands killed. Both players get to attack before results are applied if applicable.

Movement is simple. you move straight ahead for the most part and wheel to turn. I think a unit can drift 30 degrees to either side as well. formations can be column or line and there are special formations such as hedge hog.

That's the gist of the game. I've only played two games so far solo. The rules are pretty fun and simple. They don't leave you with a brain ache from heavy math.

Hope that helps,

John

So, as long as both sides are mounted for DBx or whatever, you should be good to go? It does sound bloody!

Yepper. That is all. The suggested basing actally has two sizes, 30mm for heavies and 40mm for loose order. I have found that it does not make a whole lot of difference how you base. 40mm (or 60mm) DBX basing works fine. It is what i use.

This sounds like a set I might actually have to buy. Thanks all.

I just went to the site and at $4.95 USD ea I think this will be a must buy.

I bought the first one and thought "this is pretty cool!" Bought the supplement the same day. grin

Excellent review John, thank you!

That really is it in a nutshell.

Boat load of fun, very easy to play and the winner will be the person that has best used his reserves.

Great description of the game. Thanks. I should have a preview up by next week some time.

I'll definitely be picking these up:
I love 5,ooo point WarMaster Battles, but:
It's too much for a Convention.
This solves the Problem, elegantly.
