May's too late, the movie craze will be dead by then. :)

Lord Billington Wadsworth Fezian26 Mar 2007 7:24 a.m. PST

These have been kicking around for a few years now – at Conventions and the like – and I *STILL* get giddy about them.

Hundvig Fezian26 Mar 2007 7:27 a.m. PST

Oh, they look fine. They're just a little late to ride the publicity wave.

Heck, they're a little late, period. :(

diamondjim II26 Mar 2007 7:29 a.m. PST

Well, late or not, it might finally get me to jump in on the Wargods game. None of the other armies held much appeal for me, but there are just cool figures, 300 or no 300.

John the OFM26 Mar 2007 7:30 a.m. PST

I didn't know that Sparta had an Ark of the Covenant, too. ("We got one just like it. It's verrrry nice!")
So, I guess all those chapters that no one bothers to read in "Holy Grail, Holy Blood" about the Spartan/Israelite connection are true.

Seriously, will there be gods and goddesses? Will there FINALLY be gods and goddesses compatible with Foundry and Redoubt Trojan War ranges?

Are WARGODS figures compatible with ORDINARY 28mm figures, or are they in some crazy scale all their own?

Alxbates26 Mar 2007 7:34 a.m. PST

Wargods figures are in just about exactly the same scale as Warhammer Fantasy figures, so they fit in just right with Copplestone Castings' stuff (we're using some of his Africa stuff as tribesmen) and Reaper's fantasy figures.

There won't be gods and goddesses, but there will be Demigods and Demigoddesses – similar to Aegyptus' Harbingers, the land of Hellas will be defended by mortals imbued (in this case, by birth) with divine power.

I was fortunate enough to buy a bunch of these guys at GenCon last summer, and they're beautiful. I've seen most of the other stuff in person, too, and it all looks great, some of the best stuff that Crocodile Games has ever produced (and, slow as they are, the quality has always been very high).

The Titans are coming next! Yee-haw!

azeze300026 Mar 2007 7:38 a.m. PST

2 main questions :

will they be compatible with other 28 mm figures and what will be the price ???

They look nice but we already have lot of Greeks . So if the price is good maybe i will change one unit for the new ones .
If not , no way

( by the way i am still waitting for the delivery of my order : more than 3 weeks to arrive in France ………..)

azeze300026 Mar 2007 7:40 a.m. PST

Same scale than Warhammer Fantasy ??????? so it is not 28 mm , must be 32 !!!

mweaver26 Mar 2007 7:40 a.m. PST

Mighty fine looking figures, those!

Alxbates26 Mar 2007 7:47 a.m. PST

Same scale as Reaper, same scale as Copplestone, smaller than West Wind, taller but less blocky than Black Tree Design, slightly smaller (for normal troopers) than Privateer Press Warmachine or Hordes human soldiers, about the same as Hasslefree.

I call it 28mm.

Psycho Rabbit26 Mar 2007 7:53 a.m. PST

Sweet!

Really, really looking forward to WGoO.

Rabbit

15mm and 28mm Fanatik26 Mar 2007 7:57 a.m. PST

I take it this will be compatible with Aegyptus, like Hordes with Warmachine.

Alxbates26 Mar 2007 7:59 a.m. PST

Yep, the Wargods of Olympus setting will be compatible with Aegyptus.

Similar to the Hordes/Warmachine relationship, there will be some slight changes to the rules (Demigods instead of Harbingers, new unit formations – Phalanx and possibly others), but it's intended that the two games can be played with or against each other.

louboy0626 Mar 2007 8:14 a.m. PST

I dont like their spears at all.

Elchimpster26 Mar 2007 8:19 a.m. PST

These are extra shiny! I'll certainly be picking these up! Maybe not 300…but in numbers.
;)

axabrax26 Mar 2007 8:25 a.m. PST

What is the game system like? Is it a skirimish system or larger scale? What will the other factions be? Athenians and Persians, or far out fantasy stuff like Titans and such?

Too bad they couldn't have timed it to release them right now. (I have to agree that May is a little late to really cash in on the free 300 marketing buzz.)

Genesteeler26 Mar 2007 8:48 a.m. PST

These miniatures don't need a movie to sell them.

Cacique Caribe26 Mar 2007 9:04 a.m. PST

If this is their idea of a "spartan" review, it is pretty thorough. :)

Black Cat 1326 Mar 2007 9:22 a.m. PST

Wargods is based on mythology. You'll see Titans (already done for years, and very cool stuff), and Hollywood style Mycenae. They are around 32 mm figures, like most "heroic" fantasy lines, but much better proportioned. They fit with Aegyptus, and Hyboria lines. The game is about the same complexity as Warhammer, but it has orders that units need to follow. I'm just hoping it does not take 10 years for them to finish this line.

Father Georgi26 Mar 2007 9:22 a.m. PST

Wargods is set at a large skirish level, given that there are rules for unit formations.

The figures are much larger than the Foundry Greeks, but I use teh Alcibiadis figure as my Athenian General as he really stands out.

I have some of their Spartans, and they are great figures but they seem to wearing diapers

Psycho Rabbit26 Mar 2007 9:25 a.m. PST

axabrax,

I believe there are plans for many of the city-states as well as a Titan faction representing the Persian Empire. Though unconfirmed I think they're planning some monster types as well throughout the line.

GypsyComet26 Mar 2007 9:29 a.m. PST

"Hollywood style Mycenae"

I picked up two units of those last year at a Con. Very nice, but awaiting their spot in the queue and some serious painting inspiration.

How long before War Gods of The North? I want my fantasy Viking fix!!!

Reiver7426 Mar 2007 9:35 a.m. PST

TG –

That would be "Wargods of Valhalla"

Conquest Miniatures26 Mar 2007 9:48 a.m. PST

The Titan faction doesn't represent Persia, just to be clear. The Titans are the enemies of the gods returned to wreak havok. They are led by a Titan King named Xerxes, hence the persianesque assumption/confusion.

There will be monsters, lots of them, as well as city states led by Demigods against the enemies of Hellas or their own neighbors. Sparta being the first City-State to be released.

Any Demigod can lead a City-State.

WarGods of Valhalla, whats that?

Garand26 Mar 2007 10:01 a.m. PST

If these are the same figures I saw previews of (and they appear to be) I know I'll not be buying. It's not about the figure size, or the historical accuracy. But why is it considered cool that all these figures are wearing speedos? I thought it looked aweful in 300, I think it will be equally lame here as well. Sorry, someone had to post the dissenting opinion…

Damon.

Farstar26 Mar 2007 10:04 a.m. PST

Valhalla? Nah, that means you are already dead!

IIRC, the Wendigo are the early preview for Wargods of *Hyperborea*.

Zenwired26 Mar 2007 10:05 a.m. PST

Wargods figures are in just about exactly the same scale as Warhammer Fantasy figures

Height-wise, I would say this is accurate, but based on what I've seen of the Wargods line the proportions are much more realistic. (E.g. the Wargods mummy I have is almost the exact same height as a Warhammer mummy I also have, but the Warhammer mummy is about 30 to 40% chunkier.)

On the other hand, there's Crocodile's Ice Witch of Hyperborea… I don't even know what scale she's supposed to be – she towers over everything I have. Or she would, were she actually to be standing next to them on the table. Fortunatley, she's flying, so it's not quite as noticeable.

Might just have to get me some of these to sit on my desk. I don't play fantasy/ancients, but those are nice.

Farstar26 Mar 2007 10:13 a.m. PST

The Ice Witch has horns, so in my book that removes her from the ranks of humanity enough that she can be as tall as she wants…

DeanMoto26 Mar 2007 10:19 a.m. PST

Speedos – all of 'em? Can't tell in the photo with the shield in the way – the picture image of Leonidas(?) has him wearing a proper "skirt." If he looks anything like that image I'm getting him at least.

Conquest Miniatures26 Mar 2007 10:32 a.m. PST

The Spartan warriors have speedo looking drawers. So do some of the characters. We would have done them naked but someone would have compalined about that too.

The ice Witch is large on purpose. All 'Harbiners' types are. They are imbued with the power of the Gods, and it is supposed to be obvious on the battlefield.

AndrewGPaul26 Mar 2007 10:36 a.m. PST

Heh. Website's down again :)

Will the little widgets (casualty, armour rack) be available separately? I picked up the heroes at Salute last year, but there were no doodads then.

blacksmith26 Mar 2007 10:49 a.m. PST

What I want from them is minotaurs, harpies, satyrs, medusa and the like, to confront to Foundry's Argonauts

Farstar26 Mar 2007 10:49 a.m. PST

"Heh. Website's down again :)"

Sort of. I noticed it was having issues with "first requests" an hour ago, but a second attempt usually got the page I wanted to show up.

SteveP26 Mar 2007 11:15 a.m. PST

I'm for sure picking up this set… these are great. I'll get mine at KublaCon, bring extra Chris.

I second Blacksmith: harpies, satyrs.

Agree with above: they're sized like GW but their proportions are like Copplestone, more or less, making them very suitable for Pulp, Stargate and Conanesque hyperborian fantasy.

And the Ark of the Covenant comes with a Stargate dude and both are great figs!

Saladin26 Mar 2007 12:45 p.m. PST

There's a much bigger market for figures if they are compatible with other lines – both in size and subject matter.

Too many companies think they are going to corner the market by creating a completely new setting and figures. And they usually either fade away or end up confined to a very small niche.

(And the website seems to be in bad shape right now:

The problem with scale is that too many different scales are labeled as 28mm. Many companies make figures up to 35mm tall and label them as 25-28mm scale or call them "Heroic" with a wink and a nod.

I personally own a great number of Crocodile figures and enjoy them very much. They are as compatible as you can possibly be with most other fantasy ranges out there. I would be comfortable putting them on the table with any other "28mm" fantasy range being produced. Historicals do tend to be more diminutive but that's a choice you have to make. My feeling is that if the figures fit on the required bases for the game and rank up nicely, 5mm either way doesn't make much difference to me. I have a few of the humans on my desk right now and just measured them. From toe to eye they are 29mm. The characters are a bit more "Heroic" so a bit larger. More importantly, do they paint up nicely and look cool? These obviously do.

blacksmith26 Mar 2007 3:16 p.m. PST

Talking about scale, could anyone post a link with a pic of a Foundry Greek next to a Spartan from Crocodile? CC? ;-)

WarWizard26 Mar 2007 3:49 p.m. PST

I can't get their website to load either.

DeanMoto26 Mar 2007 3:51 p.m. PST

"I have a few of the humans on my desk right now and just measured them. From toe to eye they are 29mm." Man, I thought I was short…

Metropolis26 Mar 2007 4:02 p.m. PST

In the 2nd edition rules, there are references to the GodKings of Babylon and the survivors from Atlantis. I spoke to Chris FitzPatrick at GenCon last year and he told me along with everyone else within my group there is a possible War Gods of Azteca down the line after Aegyptus, Olympus, Valhalla etc.

I'm personally waiting to see if there will be any Macedonians or Alexander the Great within the Olympus range. Chris hinted there might be.

AndrewGPaul26 Mar 2007 4:18 p.m. PST

blacksmith, I can't give you a pic, but I can tell you that the Foundry Argonauts are a head shorter than the CC Spartans. They mix OK with Aegyptus units, since the non-human-ness disguises the difference. Regarding the Spartans, they'd be OK as long as they weren't adjacent, IMO. Obviously, the CC SPartans have beefier weapons, too.

Conquest Miniatures26 Mar 2007 6:50 p.m. PST

Metropolis, I'm not sure if you're remembering wrong or what he said exactly, but there has never been plans to do an Aztec background.

WarGods main realms include AEgyptus, Olympus, Valhalla, Hyperborea and Atlantis. Other areas may be covered in supplements or sub-plots, but these would focus on the main realms already mentioned and their surroundings. Maybe he was saying it's not totally out of the question, but I'd say it's most probably out of the question.

Wow, great figures*!

Any chance the Spartan Phalanx figure assorment will be like the one in the picture?

Or will it be more like a collectable miniatures game with any number of the spear poses possible as the contents?

I ask because I want my 300 Spartans grin to be in something of an organized formation with their spears. Like in the picture. thumbs up

Bill

Genesteeler27 Mar 2007 9:28 a.m. PST

*and those are some great pictures of the figures as well!

MONGREL127 Mar 2007 12:45 p.m. PST

Why has the Spartan Hero got a trident? Looks daft.

Osiris Sponsoring Member of TMP27 Mar 2007 2:38 p.m. PST

The new Spartan Phalanxes are sold with an assorment just like the picture. The Front Rank models have a seperate arm, that can be posed in a variety of angles, and we also have an arm holding the spear overhanded, for those who like them the other way (see the WGO-001 Spartan Hoplite Booster.) So, there is lots of variety, if that's what you like.
