Question for you, Ged. As you know, I just got the first "tranche" of Texas Rangers in the mail. Is that a uniform they're wearing? If so, what color jacket and/or cap? Btw, I really like Western figures who AREN'T wearing a cowboy hat. Not that there's anything wrong with that. 🙄 |
doc mcb | 23 Oct 2024 1:39 p.m. PST |
John, I think almost all the Texas "regulars" of various sorts wore gray. |
John the OFM | 23 Oct 2024 2:01 p.m. PST |
Interesting, Doc. Thanks for that. I'll have to go and watch the early Gus and Woodrow mini series. I'm not a real fan of prequels, but this is an emergency! 😄 They fit in very well with the "no cowboy hat" Old Glory Texas Rangers too. It's important to me that none of my Irregulars look alike. Because if they did look alike, they wouldn't be Irregulars, would they? |

If you are using them post Mex-Am War, mix in some US Regular blue. |

Hi John…….great question ..with an almost easy answer. No uniform was worn by any of the early Texas Rangers ..aside from the multitude of hats… the only clothes they had were the ones they wore when they got up..Jack Hayes is smarter in his dress…and Big Foot Wallace loved a Mexican Serape.Priority was on the weapons they carried..a mutitude ..clothes and weapons were stripped from the dead Bandits and other foes.mixed in were the furs and skins from the ever present wildlife a typical Ranger carried two flintlocks and most of the time a 0.36 Colt Paterson pistol plains rifle or shotgun..a single dollar kitchen knife or Bowie knife..lasso.and maybe a perpperpot deringer stuffed down a boot…actual gear of one ranger in 1844…….!! another favourite was the puffball hat worn by the 1st and 2nd Dragoons,,very Mexican War look….the 900 rangers that rode into Mexico City were described as being like a bunch exotic looking wildmen tough as Nails and no doubt a sight to behold….!! regards Ged gringo40s.com |

Well, I have way too many Comanches, so if I want to defend San Antonio properly, I need to get a bunch more Rangers. I just got to sell more blood… Them dudes are pretty well armed. It reminds me of the story of that consummate diplomat Kaiser Bill touring Switzerland. He was surveying the border defenses. How can you turn down the Kaiser? Well, maybe because he's not that bright… KB asked the Marshall of Switzerland how good his troops were. "We, we got a million soldiers to man the defenses." "What if I attack with two million?" "We will just have to shoot twice." Like I said, I'm glad the Rangers are so well armed. 🙄 Ya know… Comanches. |

A ranger was supposed to be able to ride like a Mexican, shoot like a Tennessean, and track like an Apache. |

The Tonkawa's were a small tribe who allied themselves with the Texans against the Comanche. Very primitive, and reportedly given to cannibalism. There are accounts of mounted Texans taking them up to ride along, e.g. at Plum Creek. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonkawa "In 1824, the Tonkawa entered into a treaty with Stephen F. Austin to protect Anglo-American immigrants against the Comanche. At the time, Austin was an agent recruiting immigrants to settle in the Mexican state of Coahuila y Texas. In 1840 at the Battle of Plum Creek and again in 1858 at the Battle of Little Robe Creek, the Tonkawa fought alongside the Texas Rangers against the Comanche.[8]" |

Ooooh! Thanks, Doc! Cannibal …. Plains Indians. Yes. I can find figures, even if I have to draft Apaches. 🤔 |

They do not seem to have been a horse culture so Apache's on foot might do well. Not mention of firearms either. Very primitive. |

Tangled Honor Kindle Edition by Philip McBride (Author) Format: Kindle Edition 4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 14 ratings See all formats and editions Tangled Honor is the first of a three-book set that follows Confederate Captain John McBee through the Civil War. McBee is part of Hood's Texas Brigade, where he commands Company C in the Fifth Texas Infantry, the famed "Bloody Fifth" regiment. The action in Tangled Honor comes in 1862, the Texans' first year of combat when McBee leads his men, who are from a single Texas town, into the maelstrom of battle at Gaines' Mill, Second Manassas, and more. Beyond the battles, Tangled Honor explores the vexing relationship between McBee and Levi, the McBee family slave who accompanies the captain to war as his body-servant. |

Brother Phil's HONOR trilogy is Civil War, but this first volume opens with young McBee fighting at Plum Creek, and the Tonkawas are discussed. Phil has become quite a good novelist and he researches assiduously. he is my best friend, although a yellow-dog Democrat, and his books are all worth reading. The honor trilogy focuses on our g'g'g' uncle JJ and Levi miller, though Phil interprets their relationship rather differently than I do. Sadly, we have no records that give insight into their inner selves. |
