The best part about this news release is that now I know the paint scheme for the Space Judge that has been sitting on my workbench since my Kickstarter minis came in!

Jovian114 Feb 2013 12:02 p.m. PST

Dreddful.

A Badger14 Feb 2013 12:21 p.m. PST

I thought Giant was meant to be of African descent?

yoakley14 Feb 2013 12:24 p.m. PST

Giant was black, Fergee was huge and the special weapons judges were not apes.

Jim Bowen14 Feb 2013 12:40 p.m. PST

Shame there have been some nice minis in this line not sure about these and how can the painter get Giants race wrong

nazrat14 Feb 2013 3:18 p.m. PST

Erm, he didn't read the comic? Heck, I HAVE read it (and not that long ago) and I had forgotten that Giant was black. I don't see what the big deal is-- it's a simple mistake.

I had thought that might be the special weapon judge mislabeled. It doesn't look like a regular lawgiver to me.

This latest crop of figures are fairly horrible. The problem with the Mongoose line is that there is no consistency in it as they seem to be using anyone who claims to be a sculptor. Some figures are great, some are very bad. I did the KickStarter, but I will only buy figures individually now and after I have been able to see them.

I'm a massive fan of old stony face, and really like mongooses' FREE game. Sadly the miniatures often leave me cold as the posing is so wooden and 2 dimensional it doesn't inspire me.

If it is a well known setting like JD, getting the race of one of the main characters wrong is simply lazy. If these models are being professionally painted by someone, they should be correct, or they should find a better painter. (Maybe one who doesn't try mediocre NMM and just paints well and accurately.)

Also (although not here) on the website there are examples of judges in blue (bodyglove thingy). It is black. No ifs or buts. It may look nice in blue but it's not Dredd.

I just use other miniatures…. lots of 'proxies' for judges, punks, gangers, robots, mutants, etc…

Really? I've got countless 2000AD, Judge Dredd Magazines, Trade Paperbacks etc where the uniform has been depicted as blue.

I know :) but (according to an aquaintance who worked for 2000AD) that was/is mainly due to the problems drawing, filling and highlighting large areas of black in colour comics.

I've had this same discussion with my regular gaming partner and i was arguing for blue (what I grew up seeing in the 80's and 90's and is easier to paint well) but had to eventually admit defeat……

Also John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra say black so my moneys on them!

Fergal15 Feb 2013 8:10 p.m. PST

I'm a huge fan of Dredd, I gotta say that when he's in color, it's pretty consistently blue. If the creators say its black, but the pictures are blue, I think it's anyone's choice. :)

For me personally, my childhood memories of Dredd and the comics I still have tell me to paint blue.

@Beneath A Lead Mountain

when will you be over to repaint my minis as I've done them a very dark blue colour which might offend you

don't worry I'll provide coffee and biscuits to keep you going

6milPhil16 Feb 2013 7:25 a.m. PST

Who's sculpting these?

Gangrel16 Feb 2013 8:11 a.m. PST

I can fully understand the black/blue uniform confusion (comic artists have highlighted black with blue for years; just look at Superman's hair), it's the skin colour I don't get. Even IF a contract painter had never read old Dredd stories and for whatever reason didn't do any research, surely someone at Mongoose ought to have seen the error and asked for a repaint? At least before posting it to news sites.

Beneath A Lead Mountain16 Feb 2013 8:30 a.m. PST

@TauBoyMike anytime you like, but can I have squash instead? My rates are indecent but my paintings ok. It gets better depending on the quality of biscuits. Also I'll want to file down the badges so I can sculpt the judges name on them :).

I wish I'd never bothered now :). My information was coming from a friend who worked for 2000AD and I was just stating that the blue seen in the comics was (originally) used to represent the effect of light falling on the black uniform. Although even I'm not sure what was happening with the emaciated, yoga Dredd from the 90's……

I'm definitely not saying any gamer is wrong painting their minis any colour they like, just shocked at mongooses inconsistency.

I'm not offended by blue outfits (they're pretty and don't have extreme highlighting difficulties) and as I said; until recently I was in total agreement.

The point that seems to have been missed (and the only bit I cared about) was the inability to depict judge Giant as himself. More importantly the miniatures are often really wooden and badly posed. And yet I'll still probably buy them…….

@Gangrel: Thank you, I shall have to get you to write all my comments and press releases from now on as you're more succinct and understand my point :)

@Beneath A Lead Mountain

deal, I have a good selection of squashes including posh ribena ;-)

I do get what you are saying about the lack of consistency with Mongoose and the mistake with Giant should have been spotted and corrected before any picture was shown (I even posted on Mongooses forum about this)

one thing that is good is at least they seem to have 1 painter working on their new judges so the new releases are looking similar, I just wish they would invest a bit and get some of the old sculpts repainted so the whole range looks the same

for me I tried using a black uniform but couldn't get it to look right so I ended up with a very dark blue, maybe it was a nod to artwork from the old comics I excitedly brought in my teenage youth

anyway sorry if I came across as a bit sarcastic to you, I guess I should know better then to post before my second cup of coffee

Fellspar17 Feb 2013 9:07 p.m. PST

Wow these are pretty rough, fergies not even close to scale and he was a little mutated in the 2000ad comics. judge Giants just a stupid mistake. I really like the foundry judge dredd and the old gw stuff. As for blue or black, all cops are the boys in blue and since judge dredd took place in america, my judges are blue.

Sir Walter Rlyeh18 Feb 2013 12:48 p.m. PST

Even the SJS Judges, Fellspar?
