Not a campaign I knew about. Sounds very interesting.

Were captured Vichy soldiers executed as traitors to France or otherwise punished?

Probably recruited into the Free French.

Duc de Limbourg20 Oct 2014 9:43 p.m. PST

They were mostly sent back to france if i recall corretly. Only some were recruited in the free french forces.

Duc de Limbourg is correct, I think. The French were naturally not keen on killing each other when they viewed the Germans as the real enemy. On the other hand, many Vichy French troops felt they were doing their duty serving the government; to join the Free French would be akin to desertion.

Exporter is very interesting campaign, covered in wargamer-level detail by the official Australian history ( link ) by Indian army histories such as _The Tiger Strikes_, and McKenzie's _Eastern Epic_. The indispensable book on the topic, however, is probably Colin Smith's _England's Last War Against France_, which I cannot recommend highly enough.

The link to the Yahoo group seems to be not working for me. Anyone else having issues with it?
Thanks.
