I'd like to see some photos of the minis, but the artwork for the box is superb! I could use some Teutonic Knights, since they look so nice. |

Would they be 14th or early 15th century? |

Nice product but a real shame there are no alternatives to the great helms. |

Would they be 14th or early 15th century? I am not an expert on this period only extremely enthusiastic thus far. However, based on the helms and long surcoats I am afraid these would be rather closer to being 13th century. I am sure others here could be more precise. Though, FWIW, the horses' covering looks exactly like those of Testudo's Tannenberg (1410) range. I am hoping for the conversion possibilities inherent in plastic. There is always the later crusades as well.

I have no use for these and I still want them ! Could be used in Warhammer for some of the Empire knight orders as well. |

Could be used in Warhammer for some of the Empire knight orders as well. That's their primary use I'm afraid. Whilst the helmets used in the art look fine, the actual model helmets are by and large not really historical, looking more like fantasy helmets or the buckets used in Eisenstein's movie. |
| Waco Joe | 13 Feb 2012 11:49 a.m. PST |
Being plastic the extra bits on the helmets could be easily trimmed away. |
| (I make fun of others) | 13 Feb 2012 12:43 p.m. PST |
It's not extra bits that are the problems with the helmets, it's the basic shape and design. Here are good restorations of mid-13th to earth 14th century helmets:
The helmets on these models look more like those in the classic Eisenstein movie, or WFB models. |

Our Teutonics are designed primarily for historical wargames and are in the right proportions to be compatible with other products of this kind. We have also done the necessary research in the early stages of production to ensure the effective use of helmets decorated well and we found that were actually used. In any case, models of the helmets were made specifically so that anyone who wants can cut away the more showy decorations easily :) Teutonic Knights during their early history, late 12th and 13th century, fought on two crusading war front, The Holy Land and Northern Europe/Baltic region. In the Holy Land they most probably never used decorated helmets neither in battle or parade while they used them even in battle in Europe, in particular during the 13th century. The reason they started using "decorated/horned" helmets in battle in the Baltic regions is that they faced tribes of pagan/barbarian types of enemies like the Prussians and Sarmogitans. The "decorated/horned" helmets were used as intimidations against these warrior tribes who through their pagan beleifs were seeing Teutonic Knights like incarnation of the Devil (at the very first at least ). After that period "decorated" helmets were not used anymore in battle and used only on parade/ceremonies. The minis look nice, and I would get them if the helms did not look so ovewhelmingly fantasy with the amount of decoration. I can understand you can cut away decorations, but some of these heads seem like taken from Eisenstein's "Aleksander Nevsky" – not really a viable historical source. I have also never seen a visor on 13 century great helms. Still, my judgement is what is on photos fireforge website only. And the history section of the Teutonic Knights is also rather biased – I understand it comes from the site of the existing Teutonic Order i.e. far from being objective. This is not relevant for the miniatures but Fireforge would probably do well by quoting a more objective sources. I look forward to next releases though, as the quality/price ratio look excellent. |
