Who Reads ?

Well, I was curious, so I did a dump of our statistics (from mid-March through late July of 1998). Roughly a third of our readers access the magazine from sources which make it impossible to determine their country of origin, but for the remainder...

One of the guessing games that can be played with these numbers, is to try to figure out whether - for instance - the 56 hits from the Czech Republic represents one reader who checks in twice a week, or fifty people who wandered by once and never came back!

And apparently, the one fellow in the Virgin Islands who visited us once didn't care much for this site, as he's never come back... :-)

Here are some other statistics:

• most of our readers use Windows '95 (68%), versus only 6% on Macs
• it's an even split between Netscape and MS Internet Explorer users
• the most popular hour is 9-10 am Pacific Standard Time, when we get 3 times the hits we get at our least popular hour (which is midnight to 1 am PST)
• the most popular days are Mondays and Tuesdays; the least popular are the weekend
• sometimes we get a run of hits for no apparent reason - for instance, last Monday we got three times as many hits as the Monday before that, and last week we got twice the hits of any recent week
• we averaged 1,915 hits per week from March through July, but in July alone we averaged 2,248 hits/week
