235 pages. Includes author's note and sample chapters from another novel in the series.
This is one of the more recent additions to the series, and it is a prequel in the sense that it is set prior to the first novel in the series – back when Quarry was a hit man, working for The Broker, partnered with Boyd.
Quarry is enjoying time off after completing the mission in Quarry's Choice, when The Broker makes an unexpected home visit. Quarry is offered a generous fee if he will eliminate a black activist preacher whose political operation is threatening to mobilize young voters to support George McGovern in the presidential election. When he balks at taking a political job, The Broker assures him that the target is involved with the selling of illegal narcotics.
Quarry travels to St. Louis, where his sometimes partner Boyd is already surveilling Revered Lloyd's campaign HQ from an apartment across the street. The plan is for Quarry to join the campaign, using his background as a Vietnam veteran to pose as an anti-war activist.
But why is the local barmaid so friendly — and is it a coincidence that she lives just upstairs? Is there really a secret drug operation, and who is involved? Why is the reverend's wife so upset? And what happens if, contrary to The Broker's rules, Quarry finds out who their client is?
This is another solid entry in the Quarry series, as always adding a touch of humor to the proceedings. Will Quarry go through with the job, if it turns out to be political?
Can you game it? Most of the fighting is just two or three people, but there is a notable scene with a KKK-like group (hoods and capes are flammable!), as well as a double-ambush.
I liked it.
