A piece of relatively useless info..

Resin will turn soft and can be "carved" using a
woodburning tool. Heat the area you wish to carve
(say 15 seconds). The resin will turn soft enough to cut witha blade. You can also 'push' the woodburner and
the resin will seem to turn to powder.

Experiment on a blank side to get a feel for it.

Why you would want to do this is left up to the reader..
I really did have a reason..:-)

It's how you get the resin OUT of potted cable plugs… though I doubt that was YOUR reason, it was how I leaned this trick.

It is probably wise to do this only in a WELL ventilated area

Yeah, what kind of respiraTor are you using?

I learned the hard way that you should not leave resin in the sun

Goldwyrm24 Jan 2007 2:46 p.m. PST

If you leave grapes in the sun they turn into resins.

oh, and thanks for the woodburner tip!

OOOOOoooh, lovely volatiles!

Good luck with that.

That trick works fine on some resins, but be very careful, different varieties have wildly different melting points. I doubt a woodburning tool could actually ignite resin, but I could be wrong…

And yes, a respirator might be a good idea, and you should always use at least a filter mask when sanding or filing any resin.

crewchiefmodels24 Jan 2007 4:46 p.m. PST

Doesn't that give off some nasty fumes?

Black Cat Bases24 Jan 2007 5:27 p.m. PST

Yes it will give off some very nasty fumes and the ones you can't smell will be the most dangerous! Please take care and if you must do this use a proper ventilator not a dust mask!
