I just purchased a bamboo place mat (and a bamboo brush holder) and plan to turn it into a palisade of sorts.

I might also use a portion for a rope bridge.

Any recommendations?

Thanks.

Sounds like a great idea to me – a lot easier than building it from bamboo skewers or toothpicks. I'd probably set up a base out of either plaster or clay (Sculpy would be good), press the palisade in to create a trench for it, then let the base dry. After it's dry you can glue the palisabe in.

CC, I have a bunch of bamboo drink coasters (from Pier 1 store, I think) that I plan to use for the matting the Maori used on their pa's. Cut in half, a little wash and highlighting, and they should work fine. They'll double as fortifications for my East of Java/Lost World/Wherever cannibals, as soon as I actually get around to those projects in the next 5 years or so, that is.

"in the next 5 years or so"

I too have some bamboo placemats for terrain building.

I have found out that the ones that I have that are made with strings, allow to gently pull out one or two of the sticks, which creates some gaps. I think this will enhance the use as a rope bridge. As soon as I actually *play* a pulp/jungle scenario I'll try this.

I also have some that are just sticks that are stick to some kind of fabric (flat on the back, roundish on the top). I will try to use these as 'logg walls.' Just make a box out of foamcore, stick on the placemats, rouch it up a bit for texture,…

For a roundish enclosure, should I tape the top of them temporarily to a round form until the bottoms are glued and set in place?

I figured that would give it something to keep the form somewhat regular.

I plan to put these fellows defending such an enclosure:

I would roll the mat, cut the desired height, then get a MDF base to build the enclosure. You'll probably need some sort of putty to hold the bamboo in place. Sharpen the ends and paint it with dark colours to give it an "old" look. Use your imagination for details.

Cheers,

Here are some pics of my stockade from mat. I made a foam core base for it.

I cut just above and just below the tie stings. Spread white glue along the bottom and then made into the circle shape I wanted. Glue dried and held the shape.

These might also work, I think:
