I recently purchased Bag the Hun and am deciding whether to go with 1/300 Collectair or 1/600 scale Tumbling Dice. While cost is not really an issue, space is. I have a 4x6 play table and it does not seem like that is enough space for 1/300 since I guess I need at least 35x45 2-inch hexes for a game, which will not fit into a 4x6 area.

Anyway, I would appreciate seeing pictures of painted 1/600 Tumbling Dice minis, especially of Corsairs. I just hate the prospect of playing with minis that are not easily recognizable from a reasonable distance.

BTW, any BTH players in the Detroit Area?

Thanks!

You could just use 1" or 1.5" hexes instead, especially if just using fighters for the 1/300th aircraft.

Then again, the 1/600th planes are quite nice too.

I do like the TD Corsairs, since they are nicely sculpted.

I really think the issue boils down to how many aircraft you want on the tabletop, and what type of missions you will be running. The smaller scale planes are better in larger numbers, or when using bombers, since you have more room to maneuver on the table.

For straight up dogfights with just a few aircraft, I prefer the larger planes.

I've heard of people doing games in 1/144th scale, with a 4' x 6' table, so I don't think you will have any problems with either of the smaller scales.

Dom's Decals has pictures of the TD models on their site. The Corairs come in multiple versions.

I have been using both scales. 1/300 for small 6 v 6 fighter games, and the 1/600 for gaming with bomber formations. I like both scales very much.

I use 1/300th for WW II but simply because I have got so many change isn't a viable option. If I was starting out today I think I would have look long and hard at 1/600th. Identification shouldn't be an isue. My wife, no expert by any means, looking at a batch of models on my painting table went "Ooh tiny Spitfires. Those are the Malta ones aren't they?" The models were in fact Mk V's with Volks Filters. As I have said before I have started to sell of my much smaller collection of 1/300th Moderns to buy 1/600th.

I just bought some 1/600 scale aircraft from Tumbling Dice and i had my doubt about the scale. Today they arrived and i am hooked right away. I did some recognition test (rember this is unpainted aircraft),I took one spitfire, one hurricane and one bf-109e. I put them on my kitchen table and stod about 150 cm away, it was easy to point out the bf-109 from the Brittish fighers but the i could not keep the spitfire from the hurricane apart. But how often are you 150cm away from the table? From gaming distance (half meter or so) it was easy to tell them apart.

Sounds like at least some experience has rubbed off on her, if she can spot the tropical variants while just passsing by.

She's a keeper…..

1/300 for the WW2 dogfights, 1/600 jets on the same sized/hexed table…as they are smaller they look faster ;) (if only they made all the types I wanted though in 1/600….but alas, no Tomcats yet)

I know what you mean.

You can get very nice Tomcats in 1/700th though, as well as the more modern Russian planes too.

I am hoping I will prefer the 1/600th stuff as well, once it finally gets sculpted, since I have having to glue on vertical fins, and then hope they stay on while gaming.

Hi Guys,

I may a 6mm guy, but I like the 1/600 scale as well… it's really easy to use.

Having said that, my collection is 6mm or 1/285 and I don't want to invest in another scale.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Of course I have to plug my Yahoo Group that I own and that Dom co-moderates with me ;) LOL. There are lots of pics of painted and unpainted 1/600th scale aircraft there. Check it out. Robert

I must confess she had stopped for a closer look when she spotted the filters on the nose, still not bad for someone who couldn't tell a Spitfire from a Hercules when we met 20 years ago.

She's a keeper…..

Ohh yes but if I told you why I'd be Dog Housed fr ever!!
Not only that she puts up with me wargaming. ;-)

PS She doesn't mind all the stuff shes absorbed about wargaming. Its the fact that she has begun to understand the NFL that drives her mad. Go Bears!

We've done games with up to 12 B-24s, fighter escort, and as many as 10 opponents in 1/300th, all on a 5x8 table. It works out very well. Now jets, that's another issue. We've yet to try any supersonic stuff seriously, mostly Migs and Sabers. Even then the table size is fine with the 1/300. Good thing about the bigger scale is they're easier to paint, and can have better detail.

Green Dragon: How big were the hexes on the 5 X 8 table and what did you do for a hex map? Thanks.

Yup I'd like to know as well.
