If you like those, get Barlowe's 'Expedition', the one that 'Alien Planet' is based on.

My seven-year-old adores "Alien Planet."

Cotedelachevre,

I can see why!

I have Discovery's "Alien Planet" DVD and, once it comes out, I am definitely getting National Geographic's "Extraterrestrial" DVD (if/when it comes out).

Those aren't bad shows, although one might prefer something for a little more mature audience as well -- as in, with a bit more science content. Barlowe's Alien Planet beats Extraterrestrial in speculativeness, which may or may not be be a good thing, depending on your POV.

For enthusiasts of "speculative biology", there's also Future is Wild, a bit longer series looking at hypothetical animals of the far future Earth.

Tnjrp,

I am glad you brought up "Future is Wild". I have always liked that show:

The only dissappointment in that series was that it completely avoided showing what mankind would look like at each of those stages (wherever they had settled).

Barlow's "Expedition" was great, I love that book! Great lifeforms and enviroments!!

Anybody remember those Dougal Dixon future fauna books "After Man" and "Man After Man"? I liked "After Man" quite a bit, but didn't care too much for "Man After Man".
His the "New Dinosaurs" was pretty good too for a what-if the dinos hadn't died off.

Artraccoon,

I am definitely getting those two:

This just came in from the producers of Extraterrestrial.

Hi Dan,

Extratarrestrial was released on DVD for the UK market under the new name 'Alien Worlds'. It's available on the UK Amazon site (www.amazon.co.uk), but you'll need a DVD player that can handle the UK's PAL format (as opposed to NTSC).

Hope that helps.

Mark

I got a VHS tape of both 'Extrateresstrial' shows…one from National Geo and the other from History channel? One was based on Barlow's 'Expedition' but heavily modified. Still, all in all not bad and the Expedition book makes for a good look at an 'alien world' for shipwreck scenario etc…as CC said

"Anybody remember those Dougal Dixon future fauna books "After Man" and "Man After Man"?"

Both quite good. He also contributed significantly to "The Future is Wild".

Dougal is the man!

palaeoemrus19 Dec 2008 9:12 p.m. PST

In the British version of "The Future is Wild" man was not sending probes back from their new home to see what was happening on the Earth. Nope. Man was dead, gone, and forgotten.
