If there was a planet ruled by Gorillas with a technology comparable to what one would expect of Earth in the 22nd century (or beyond), what name do you think might be suitable for that world? Something like "Simia", or something else? CC |
GypsyComet | 04 Dec 2006 12:38 a.m. PST |
Depends on how they got there. Connection with Earth during their founding (assuming this world is a colony) could lead to obvious idol-driven names like Kong or Grodd, or less obvious ones like Weaver's World. Just as with humans, the world could be named in prosaic fashion in whatever languages the 'rillas know, including terrain descriptives like "Green", "Arboria", or similar, or names suggestive of the conditions leading to the founding, like "Young's Rest" or simply "Ours". |

How about these: Simia (planet inhabited by the Sims) or Congar (planet inhabited by the Congari) I will try to come up with more candidates. CC |

How about Gorillini? Gorillini is the 'tribe' that contains all the Gorillas in the biological sub-family "Homininae" from the family "Hominidae". "Hominidae" is the biological classification that contains humans, orangutangs, chimpanzees, and gorillas (aka "The Great apes"). |
Colin Hagreen | 04 Dec 2006 3:26 a.m. PST |
Assuming they evolved there; how about 'Earth'. If they were a colony of modified gorillas sent out from Earth in C22 that had settled on another planet, then the official name may be the planet's designation before they went (e.g. Centauri 4) and the local name something which reflects how they think of it – Escape, Freedom, Sanctuary if they were persecuted on Earth, for instance. Mercu-rhesus? The planet's largest body of water would be the Chimpan Sea. The most powerful nation would be the Banana Republic. The most famous composer would be Johann Sebastian Silverbach. And if you spend enough time in the sun there, you'll get an orangu tan. (I could go on endlessly, gibbon half a chance.) |

"Well, what was the name of planet where the the Orilla lived in Starguard?" I went back and read throught the supplement, and it states that, "A Federation military aid mission has been on Orilla since 2238." So I guess the humans called the homeworld Orilla. The text also refers to their sun as being a G8. |

I think it all comes down to who does the naming or if you are referring to their own name for themselves or what us earthy peoples have designated them as. Seriously, if they are their own people and developed without Earthly influence, they could be named Susan and nobody could say boo about it. I say name it whatever you want. Actually, the more monkey-ish you try to make it sound, the less "correct" it'll be. -Eli |
