This is what I love about TMP, I was wondering this very question this morning, and figured I would do a search before posing the question, and voila! The perfect answer I was looking for! |

Helmet Vallejo 888 Olive Grey Coat, Trouser, Puttees Vallejo 879 Green Brown Canvas Equipment Vallejo 881 Yellow Green Leather Equipment Vallejo 984 Flat Brown Boots Vallejo 950 Black >>> I have to disagree with their choice of uniform color here. Green-Brown? French uniforms are more BROWN,chocolate brown at that.I plan on reenacting 1940 French and have some field gear and a pair of trousers, and they are VERY brown.Vallejo Green-Brown is more on the olive green side of things. I'm also about to do some Crusader 1940 French and am going through my Vallejo paints right now to see which set of browns would be appropriate. Sgt. Bob |

I use Vallejo British Brown for them and are quite brown without losing the slightly green shade. Much more accurate. |

The brown colouring , like russians, is just not as clear cut as you think. There is a re-enactors site with genuine equipment that has everything shades of green with a slight brown tinge, more green than brown. the thing with age is it should get browner so how green was it to start with! I would mix russian uniform green with british uniform in a 2 to 1 mix in favour of the green. |

Also, old color photographs tend to make dark khaki look more brown that it was in real life. For instance, WW2 movies make US OD wool pants look brown, but they were more green than brown. |

Based on advice gathered from
well, somewhere on the Internet, I used US Field Drab (873) for the uniforms and was extremely pleased with the results. It's just the slightest bit lighter than the English Uniform, and without that color's greenish tinge, leaving it almost (but not quite) pure brown. Even after being given a black wash, it matches almost exactly the color of the French uniform shown in a picture in Brayley & Ingram's "The World War II Tommy." FWIW, I used English Uniform for the puttees, just for a bit of contrast, and thought that turned out well too. |

I used the colors listed above by SgtPerry for my 15mm French, and thought it came out pretty good: link In particular, i think the green brown for the base uniform color works quite well. It may be a tad light, but that's sometimes a good thing in 15mm. I used leather brown instead of black for the boots, which i doubt anybody would be able to tell the difference. After the initial trial above, I also thought the yellow green for canvas was too green, so added some Iraqi Sand IIRC to lighten it up. The box on their backpacks (i assumed mess kit) was painted the same as their helmet. |
