He's not! It's all a big misunderstanding. His name is really 'The Duck'. Quack, Quack. That's why he needs a microphone--ducks don't have commanding voices...! I have witnessed many of The Duck's games. They appear to be terrible bores with striking terrain. That's why I have avoided playing in them. That is as far as my disapprobation goes. All the quacking in the world cannot stop him from playing when, where, and what he wants. And that's the way it should be. [BTW, I am solely a historical gamer, though I have an active fantasy life. 'Nuff said!] |

Regardless of how people feel about fantasy games at Historicon can we make it a point to be polite and not flame the gentleman running the game that started this thread? He's not even here defending himself and people are making fun of him and his gamemastering. How would you feel?

Once again using the word "Game" for Duke's presentations is not accurate. The outcomes have been pre-determined and are usually scripted. If you realize that in the beginning it's not such a suprise. Duke's presentations portray periods that HE is interested in, showcase the figures of many different manufacturers (some of them his own sculptings), showcase his terrain building skills, and represent HIS interpretation of the period (through the rules). Most of the work is done by him! I find it interesting that most of the people that bash Duke have no idea the contributions he has made to our hobby over the past 30 years. Many of the marketing and gaming aspects of the hobby were first started by Duke 30 years ago. I'm sure Duke would post his own responses if he wasn't working fulltime, working a part-time job, writing the scenarios & rulesets for the 3 battles that are being portrayed, sculpting & casting some of the figures, organizing and overseeing the painting of 4-5000 figures, and building 3 sets of terrain. All of this by himself in less than a year. Quit knocking the guy already! |

Yes, yes. Uncle Duke does all that stuff. He is still a grouchy and patronizing snake-oil salesman SOB. And those are his good points! :^) I still haven't forgiven him for raising the prices of 25mm infantry figures from $.25 for a single figure to a blister pack of 6 for $1.98. So much for pioneering marketing aspects of the hobby; Foundry and GW learned well from him. |

WOW!! 4-5,000 miniatures, 3 rules sets, scenarios, sculpting terrain, holding down 1.5 jobs, casting and all that...perhaps he should be called KING Seigfried, not just a plain old Duke.

But I learned about gaming from people who played with Airfix Models and Minifigs. In basements. I gamed for 20 years before I went to a meeting. So the presentation of gaming "Celebrities" at these Cons is, to me, laughable. Don't kid yourself that Mr. Seigfreid and the other celebrities aren't well paid for their time, or "advanced the hobby" for altruistic reasons. KAM

Scurvy, thanks for ruining Empire Strikes Back for me.... :^) The Duke was Vader's father. Darth Duke. [Just a joke, all you 'sensitive' types.] |

I dont see a problem, granted I started in fantasy, hell I even used to help run SciFi conventions Dukes games will bring in a younger crowd who in general are ignorant of historicals stuff look upon Duke as the bait, once the youngsters are there, show them the wonders of tanks and chariots and pikes and sailing ships, whatever you like to play Dave |

John Leahy1 I would like to hear more about the HMGS chapter that excludes any games of a non historical venue. It is not these: East pushing for 25%, Midwest up to 50%, Heart of America about to break its rule of 10% for 100% or more, Mid-south anything goes, Tornado Alley just a fart in a wind storm, Gulfsouth who knows, Greatlakes hard to say, Pacific SW tries hard to get a game day, Pacific NW all are welcome, West has no idea when to game, and South is run by Pat Condry WKPP so take your best guess. They all have wonderful people, I love them all. Rick Nance

Ermmmmm who or what is the " Duke " ? |
skinkmeister | 23 Jun 2003 3:47 p.m. PST |
Uncle Duke, aka Duke Seifried,is one of the Old Guard who has been around since the first wargamer put a stick to a stone and called it a skirmisher(well, maybe not that long, but close)He always puts on huge, beautiful, but not probably fun games to play in(I've never tried)at the HMGS cons and others.A friend of mine, who is in his 50's got his start in one of the traveling wargame shows he used to do in the late 60's in Canton Ohio.I'm sure there are others who can give you more details about the man. |
