I'm looking for uniform distinctions (facing colours) etc. of Russian Napoleonic Uhlan regiments. I have seen web sites with details for every other type of Russian cavalry but not the Uhlans. Cheers Neil |

You'll find that some regiments had pennons which weren't simply "Red over Blue" and the like. Some had a narrow stripe of one of their colors at the lower, or upper, part of the other (as is typically seen in Austrian pennons). That is, such a pennon would have FOUR bands of color, which might be (reading from top to bottom): Broad red Narrow blue (Midline of Pennon) Narrow red Broad blue. It's not as difficult to paint as you might imagine. |

Oh, and at least one had its pennon "quartered", tho there were only two colors. |

Thanks Robert. Luckily These are 6mm figures so I'm keeping it simple. Where did you get the information? Are there any contemporary plates which are available on the web? |

I got the basic stuff from two main sources: Osprey's "Russian Army of Nap Wars (Cavalry)", and also the Hourtoulle "Borodino" (tho this only covers the combatants there, rather than being a general survey) From memory, only two (Russian) Uhlan Regiments were there, the Polish and the Lithuanian; each had dark red/crimson plastron facings, but their czapkas were of different colors (I think the L. had dark blue with white lace, the P. White with "raspberry" lace) and pennons were different. There are at least two great sources on this Site that I know of; One is to be found under an enquiry about "Cossack Standards" or similar title, and there's another in color been posted very recently; I'll see can I find it and return in a minute or two. |

The other one is "Russian Troops around 1812", just below this thread (at least, for the moment) |

Oh yes: you'll like this, for 6mm. The Polish Uhlans (i.e. in Russian service) are shown in the "Borodino" book with shabraques of the same pattern – the rounded edges also seen in Dragoons – as the Lithuanian and indeed all other Russian Ulan Regiments, but with different colors. Instead of dark blue edged with a broad "raspberry" stripe, these were Crimson edged with broad blue stripe. It looks really good in 15mm (Minifigs), but I had to mix a number of paints and experiment quite a bit before getting the color right. I'd guess, however, in 6mm "Polish Crimson" enamel would look fine. |

By far the best source for this kind of stuff is Mark Conrad's home page with his translations of Vikovatov: link NSN |

Thats excellent. Thanks. I've actually painted the Polish and Lithuanian regiments. I used the information from the link which I gave at the top of the page. So the Shabraques are dark blue with carmine red (although I've used vallejo red since I want something brighter on 6mm troops.) The painters are still finishing these little chaps off. But I think they will look nice when they are done. NSN, I can't seem to open that link. Could just be my dodgy internet connection. |
