The 1/72 plastic Zombies!!! are quite fun to paint up and painting gives them a lot more character. The 2nd edition of the box game is out now and includes female zombies as well as the males. The old 20mm GW Dark Future minis make great Zombie Hunters. I've mounted the hunters on 2 pennies to match the thickness of the plastic zombie bases.

The whole cast so far:

Looks like you have enough for a "small" game. :)

Well, I started with the Zombies!!! game with 100 zeds, then the expansion with 100 doggies, and then the 2nd edition box with 50 more boy zombies and 50 girl zombies….. and wham, there's a horde of 300. They paint up pretty quickly since zombies actually benefit from a somewhat impressionistic painting style.

I also have a bag-o-zombies for another 100 that glow in the dark — I might get around to painting their clothing and bases. But I wouldn't be able to just spray them down with Rustoleum Plastic Primer, so I'm not sure if there's a good way to do them.

Before I even think about that though, I've got more Dark Future figs on hand to paint up some more hunter squads, including more women. And I may have to order some Liberation minis to get some of their women and kids with AK-47s.

And there are a few more zombies on the way. After I finished painting these I did just order a bag of Two-Hour's 15mm figs to add in 20 zombie children (and 4 child hunters to build a couple of family survivor groups). But I was good this time and waited until I'd finished painting my first 300 zombies before buying any more :}

Great stuff!

These remind me of my idea of doing a WWII/modern zombie-crossover game…

If you want some of the glow in the dark parts show why not hand paint the primer to these figures? Sure it'll take somewhat more time than spraying but not really THAT much…

Here's the next batch o pix:

ATZ 15mm zombies as 20mm kids with some plastic zeds for size comparison. The tall kids in the back, behind the Schoolboys in uniform were poorly sculpted, the eyeballs were up near the top of the skull, so I added some more hair on top with putty. The Schoolgirls and the kids without shirts were all cast without a right arm, so I gave most of them their arms back with putty.
picture

Some star zombies, again with plastics for comparison. The Priest and the Patient are from CP's religious pack and German scientist pack with simple weapon snips. The Recruiting Sergeant and Zingo the Zombie Clown (is he really a zombie, or just a very disturbed clown?) are some old 1/72 plastic WWII Germans. The Girls and Shriners are HO/OO Plasticville figs.
*singing* "Zeds in white dresses with blue-satin sashes, zombies who chew on my nose and eyelashes!"

Some toy Gators with some wounds added and a repaint. Its not clear if the gator in the opening of Day of the Dead is a zombie or not, but I don't think there would really be any difference between a live one and a zed one in a movie anyway.

And the Casualty figs. Some CP and some GW up front, plus a bunch of random non-descript figs I had kicking around:
picture

And some Survivors:

The Parochial School Faculty, figs by CP. When the kids get too bitey, the teachers all know to go straight to the faculty lockers to get their guns. Father Moolotov always leads the Nuns, Monks and Lay Teachers in restoring order so the civilian authorities don't have to be called in. Somehow, this sort of problem always seems to start in Mr. Logan's Science lab.

Civilians, African Rebel figs by Liberation:
picture

A mixed batch of civilians from ATZ, East Riding/Platoon 20, and Dark Future. Kids in front, adults in back. The 4 small kids on the left are the 15mm ATZ zombie hunters. The girl doing pistol-fu was cast with her ankles too skinny to hold her up under any handling. I glued some .020 brass along the back of her shoes and blended them in with putty. The Platoon 20 figs are 'short' 20's with some height variation in the line. When mixed with larger 20's, the shorter of their figs make good older teenagers, and their taller ones can be used as short adults. The 2 taller kids on the right and the man on the rear right are from their Modern Terrorists pack. The rest of the adults are Dark Future.

Three more groups of GW Dark Future figs.

Cultists:

Even the butchest figure can get a gender change with the help of an XActo knife. For the one in the middle — I've trimmed down thighs and biceps; sloped the shoulders; rounded the top of the head, the temples and the jaw; trimmed down the waist front and back; and added a bit of cleavage. It was a pretty quick and easy carving job. The DF line has a number of female poses, but I wanted more variety, so I've been doing some conversions from the boys.

Absolutely Freaking Superb!

Hats off to you sir!

What rules are you using?

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP09 Sep 2006 10:12 a.m. PST

We've been developing our own rules, using the old GW Space Hulk as a springboard. Each player has a squad of 4-6 survivors, or an unending stream of zombies.

I might take a look at ATZ at some point, but $17 USD for the pdf seems too high to pick it up on speculation, especially when I keep spending money on figures, Plano boxes and foam.

Sparrowhawk09 Sep 2006 11:59 a.m. PST

I like the idea of using modified Space Hulk rules for zombie games. There are a lot of similarities that I hadn't thought about before. I've been thinking about using GW's The Lord of The Rings as my starting point, but I'll dig Space Hulk out and take a look.

I don't know if you're aware of Stan Johansen's miniatures? But he does some road warriors in 20mm that fit perfectly with the old GW Dark Future stuff. Here is a link to the sets he does:

Can't wait to see more pictures of your stuff!

Also his 20mm Terrorists and spy's could work well as survivors.

Awesome stuff. Glad to see my thoughts on using Zombies!! wasn't a bad one. I have a handful from a Con years ago and tossed them in my growing 20mm box thinking they may work… and your pix confirm they will. Thanks for sharing.

Scale is not such a big deal after all.

When I look at this, I see the smaller figures as teenagers.
What do you all think?
It looks like a lot of fun games are going to be had here friend. Thank you for posting these pictures of your figures for us to enjoy!
