I have a few dozen Russian limbers to paint but I'm not sure what colour they should be. Russian artillery was approximately apple green, with metal work in black. By detault I'll paint these in apple green with the upper area of the wheel black. But if anyone knows any better I'd appreciate any advice

Everyone welcome to post :)

As far as I've studied the available materials you are quite right. Although: what colour do green apples have? I think a very dark "Granny Smith"-green should be correct.

Your right "apple green" is a very subjective color. Based on modern agriculture our interrpetation of apple green may be distorted.

I mixed some olive green, mid green and then a bit of dark green. The result is in the Granny smith range. This is for 6mm so its a bit brighter than for larger scales.

Sorry. I had already painted the gun carriages. If these are called limbers I have misused terminology. Thanks to TGQ for the picture otherwise I'd have painted ingnorance. That is luckily the colour I've painted my gun carriages :)

I'm thinking of the 'wagons' which drove up to guns, were attached, and then drove away. Whatever these are called, does anyone know if these are indeed Apple green.

The gun carriages and the limbers would, I believe, be the same colour. Excellent painting btw Brent.

Hi Guy's,

First post so be gentle, I've always gone for a darker green similar to Russian infantry uniforms and then dry brushed brown over the model to simulate where the paint would have been knocked or worn off.

The colour TGQ uses seems to be just right – and his painting is just marvellous!
Limbers (they are limbers even if they have ammo boxes on) the same colour as carriages.

The Russians never described the paintwork as "apple green".
That's someone's estimation that's become enshrined in
English language references. The color is dark green.

Ron looking at your wargames den web page brought up another color question!! What paint do you use for your French Blue?? It looks just like the look I got when I used to be able to get the Humbrols French Blue!!!

Ron Redworth102 Aug 2006 12:41 a.m. PST

Hi Bridgemak,

I use a lot of different paint's and ink's, but for French jackets I use Games Workshop "Regal Blue" then dry brushed "Ice Blue" on top. The undercoat I use is black, remember if you use a lighten the undercoat it will change the look of the colours you paint over it.
