I noticed in Wal-Mart yesterday that they have police cars, airplanes, men and helicopters in a kiddie pack for under $2. These are modern urban figures and seem to be about 28mm. Nice cheap plastic. They also have a dinosaur pack and a jungle animal pack as well. |

Erick, department stores and dollar stores will have the best bounty of stuff for the wargamer! Might I also suggest party supply stores? I found some PVC vinyl woolly mammoths that are PERFECT for 15mm cavemen. Good luck! |

Friends and I picked up the modern urbans. Good mix of poses/roles, and the vehicles were decent enough for figs on the cheap. Great as generic army men. |

Modern civilians... for my terrorist to terrorize, my criminals to commit crimes against and to run in terror from tragic natural disasters in my games? Oh joy! Just what the doctor ordered! |

Of course if GW is as evil as many people on these boards claim then you just invited the Flame War Of The Century by mentioning Wal-Mart. |

I got 2 different dino packs at Wal-Mart.One had these cavemen that were bigger than the dinos, about 54mm.They're gonna make perfect ogres,at about 10 cents apiece. |

The evil, insidious Wal-Mart promotion has begun! Move to protect your souls against their vile, corporate influence! OK, go to Wal-Mart if you like. I've been boycotting them for some years now, but free-will holds sway so do as you like. Cheers! |

For civilians you might want to look at Preiser in the railway modellers shops. They make several excellent cheap large ranges of plastic Joe and Janette Public in several suitable scales as railway passengers. For some reason they also seem to come painted. We found the 1:76 to be ideal as they are slightly smaller than 28mm heroes so they make ideal npc's. We used to use them to populate Megacity 1 for Judge Dredd games - ironic, as now most UK railway passengers have gone "Futsie". |

Saturday. my local WalMart also had the new Corgi die casts in approximately 20mm or whatever. There were Shermans, T34/85's, Hueys, Hummers, etc. I have also purchased Bags O'Sharks, Bags O'Crocodiles, and their craft department has all kinds of neat stuff, like Ceramcote paints, X-acto refill blades, casualty caps (seriously: curtain rings), and lots of etc. |

I, too, bought a set of the dino's from Wal-Mart. I painted up the cave men by applying paint to bare plastic, where appropriate, then DIP'ed them. They make sweet Ogres/Hill Giants, and they're incredibly affordable. I also used the Triceratops to give my Goblins some ultra-heavy cavalry... The Sabre-tooth Tigers turned out neat, too. The rest are waiting for some use, but for what I've gleaned so far, the $6.00 tub was a fantastic buy! Cheers! |

Party stores also have great palm trees. Just take off a layer or two of fronds, base them and dry brush. |

Ever try a cake supply shop? You can find all kinds of cool goodies, especially for creating your own terrein. Of course, they have Grecian columns for wedding cakes, but many also carry all kinds of really cheap plastic trees, including large palm trees that are perfect for 28mm gaming. Around here (Florida) I find them for about .50 cents a piece. |

Wal-Mart is also carrying plastic playsets with modern and fantasy themes for $4.99. The sets include a fortress/castle carrying case, figs, vehicles/period artillery (for the fantasy set, a bombard and a rubber-band powered catapult). Cheap stuff, but fun. If you ever picked up the "Dragon (or Army) Mini-Carry Case" soldiers from Dollar Tree, these are the same figs, just more of 'em with a bigger, better castle. I haven't picked up a set myself, but the temptation is growing... |

I can't stand the quality of the figures that most cake supply shops seem to carry, so I'm going to wait for Games Workshop to come out with their WarGrooms[tm] army packs (part of their forthcoming InLaws from Hell[tm] product line). |

For those looking for cheap jungle or sci-fi terrain check out the pets department at stores for plastic aquarium plants. You can get a couple of bags of plants for about $15. Just mount a few clusters of them on a base and VOILA! instant jungle. |

Go to a grocery store, and back in the bakery section, ask for the cake decoration palm trees.I did this and the woman had no idea what to charge-it came out to .25 for a huge handful. |

I ordered around 1,000 trees, of various types, from a cake decorating supply shop, sold scads to friends for their gaming tables, kept 100 for myself, and then I auctioned the rest off on e-Bay. My investment, up front, was around $70.00, and I recovered all but $5.00. It worked for me. By ordering a large quantity, with a wide variety, I got everything I could possibly need, to cover (literally!) my 9' x 5' table. The company had a $50.00 minimum order, but I had no difficulty selling off the excess trees. Here's a link, for anyone interested: www.cakedeco.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_main.html?catid=10&sid=9ZPAaE0li5DF6Oz
Cheers!
