Yes, I know the viking village buildings featured in the "Eaters of the Dead" movie adaptation "The Thirteenth Warrior" are more fantasy than historical, but does anyone know: 1. Are the buildings still standing? I thought I read the movies was filmed in Vancouver, Canada. 2. Are there plans, or movie set stills somewhere, that I could use if I wanted to re-create the village? |

It was filmed on Vancouver Island (not to be confused with the city of Vancouver, somewhere upisland, I can't remember where exactly. Not sure if the sets are still there. Mike |

I would like to get myself a nice viking terrain set. Does anyone sell any paper or prefab viking terrain? |

Hm, the only paper viking building sets I know are very childish, not suitable for gaming purposes, but there might be others out there. |

Sorry, I should clarify: I know how to grab still frames from the movie, and I could probably figure out the layout from several such stills. But, cursory review of the stills leave out many details. What I am curious about is whether there are any pictures of the set not incorporated into the movie, perhaps from a "making of" film. Even better would be an overhead aerial photograph. And best of all would be the opportunity to actually wander around the set, much as I understand portions of the Lord of the Rings set is available for view in New Zealand. |

Doing some searching on the web and I came across an extra's perspective on making the movie. vts.bc.ca/extra.htm He says they needed to take a helicopter to get to the production tents. I says which river they are near, but I'll keep looking to see if the village is still standing. |

I've found all the info needed: link This interview says the village was built at Elk Bay. That refined my search and helped me find
link Where he says they burned the village down and filmed it as they did. So the village was burnt to the ground. You'll have to find aerial shots if you can. Damn! I'd think it would be cool to walk around in a place like that. |

northislandlinks.com/eaters That's the only online source of pictures that aren't taken from film footage. They aren't that good, but there are a few odd angled shots of the village that might help put it in perspective. |

archeologists a thousand years from now will mistake it for a real viking village in North America. ;) |

MusedFable: Thank you very much for your help. That North Island link is excellent; too bad the photos are such low resolution. Then again, that was the late 1990s, and we should be grateful for any record of the construction. It will be fun to work out the floor plan of the main hall with these resources. I will also hope and wish the unused footage from the movie is released some day. |

GW's LotR site has plans for making a few types of buildings for "Rohan" which might be a place to start – the Rohirrim are based on the Anglo-Saxons so the architecture would be similar. Warhammer Ancient Battles (the original edition, not sure about v 2.0) also has line drawings of Viking buildings and some ideas on making them. GW's "How to Make Wargames Terrain" also has some good ideas, as often do Wargames Illustrated terrain articles when they deal with the period. |

Usborne had a paper viking village in HO scale (20mm) if one enlarges them on a color copier, one can get something approximating 25mm. Unfortunately, this booklet is now out of print. |
