I'm painting some Black Sea Sarmatian infantry from Old Glory (15mm). The infantry in question have large, oval shields. Any ideas on what kind of painted appearance the shields should have? |

I agree. Any design or just plain leather covered shields will do. I painted mine green, red, blue, white with contrasting dots, stars or shield bosses. |

Bosporan art shows them as white or pale cream with a dark yellowish coloured rim which may be intended as shading, as a coloured band or as a bronze rim. All the ones in the pic I have (which may well be of the only coloured pic of troops of this type) have the same coloured shield and there is no other design on them. Hellenistic shields from roughly the same time and of the sort are generally plain and often white. S. |

I think the Sarmatians were influenced by Greek culture by way of sea traders in the black sea. So maybe greek motifs would not be out of place if you were were looking to do something with more flash then a flat colour. |

Outstanding. I'll go with the more conservative approaches, and I appreciate the help – immensely. Many thanks! |
