Come back safe.

Our thoughts are with you.

Many thanks again to all for the very kind messages – they mean a great deal to me. (In fact I think I'll print out a copy and keep it in my folder to read as a 'pick-me-up' (at least +2 on morale) should I ever need it).

Old Grenadier – you're right, I should know better! I volunteered for this one however as I have always been fascinated by this part of the world (the whole Silk Road to Back of Beyond thing) and I figured that I won't be getting many more opportunities to see the region. Also, it isn't the sort of destination for a long weekend break away with the Memh-Sahib!

Thank you for the kind offer Dimitriia, I hope I will not need it but I shall keep it 'in my back pocket' just in case. Bless you.

Thanks again to all!!

Good luck then mate- what with the 'spring offensive' and the overt opium reduction programmes it's getting pretty hairy in Astan right about now.

The Shadow24 Jun 2006 6:54 a.m. PST

Very best of luck to you.

SkirmishFan,
I've spent quite a bit of time in that country over the years and its a fantastic place. The scenery, people and culture all make it a memorable experience.
I've had one or two bad experiences (massively outweighed by friendship and hospitality) and my advice would be that you should always keep your head screwed on, however good things are feeling. Things change very suddenly in Afghanistan. Keep your eye on a way out of places, always have a plan in your head, even if its unspoken to your oppos. Odds are nothing heavy will happen and you'll love the place as much as I do.
cheers
Sid

Keep yer head down and dice ready, amigo! I've got two nephews who did tours over there recently — both came home fine. Likewise, my buddy and business partner, Mike Murphy, serveed over there in the first war. I recall the advice he gave one young GI…

"Bring LOTS of sunscreen! No, lots!"

Be careful, and touch base with us if you can.

Stay safe and enjoy your tour. Come back with lots of pictures to share.
