As per title. I am going for a couple of months and the nature of what I am doing means that I should get to see pretty much all over the country which I am looking forward to. I hope to come back with a great collection of photos. Went to visit my Mom and Dad the other week and Dad told me that his father had served in Afghanistan and he remembers him saying about how the favourite MO was to let a convoy pass and then for the rear to be attacked -makes me feel good knowing that I'm going somewhere my Grandads been. Will log on to TMP if I get the chance whilst there. Am looking forward to catching back up on my return (particularly with any Pulp/Back of Beyond posts). If there are any TMP-ers in country already please let me know and hopefully we can try to arrange a meeting/chat!

May your wars only ever be the gaming type. Hopefully you will be back before GW jacks its prices again.

<the favourite MO was to let a convoy pass and then for the rear to be attacked>

Sounds like someone's looking for a volunteer to take point. Be careful, come back safe.

Keep your head down and your chin up, mate!
(I know this hurts but it is better then the alternatives!)

Cheers,

You are going to love it! Afghanistan is a fantastic country. I loved my time there and can't wait to get back. Have fun and don't let the petty army b.s. wreck it for you. If you are interested in colonial wargaming it's amazing how much is still around from the 2nd Afghan War and if you are interested in moderns then there is alot of the Soviet-Afghan War and the civil war in evidance and the people like to talk about those events, plus of course there is your own war…

Add me to the "stay safe and good luck" chorus. Learn to yell "Blood and souls for my Lord Arioch!" in Pashtun as a psycological tactic.

@ Saber: I was in Bosnia with "Skippy." Our duties at CJICTF overlapped by about a month. I get to say "I knew him when …"

You are civ by the sound of it though yes?

SkirmishFan23 Jun 2006 11:27 a.m. PST

Thanks to all for such wonderful messages and sound advice which I fully intend following! I hope to be able to share some of the best photos on my return.

Voodoo LG: 'You are civ by the sound of it though yes?' No – British Army (and have been 'man and boy' since 13 Sep 1977 – next year, my 30th anniversary, will be one helluva party!) but like I said, my work will take me all over the country. Any meet with a TMP-er will have to be on a base somewhere.

Jeepers Skirm, with your level of experience/grey hair/knowledge of high-ranking officers, I should think you could've managed a softer bunk than that! Ah well, the younger lads need to have some sort of example, right? Stay safe and get lots of good pics.

Jim McDaniel23 Jun 2006 7:00 p.m. PST

To misquote an old Chinese proverb, "may you have an uninteresting time over there." IE a quiet and boring one. Unless the old style badmash spirit got wiped out by the Soviets, according to Gurkha officer John Masters, the cardinal rule over there was during the "weekend wars" with the various tribes in the 1930's and may still be never do things the same way twice. Since the ever-watchful ambushers planners doing recce while lurking in the hills were forever trying to find an British tactical weakness to exploit.

Oh if it's not too nosey, what unit to you belong to? After Vietnam it's a strange situation to find reminders of former wars fought in the country you're serving in.

Again please do take care.

Grungydan23 Jun 2006 7:29 p.m. PST

Be careful, keep your head down, and don't ride in the first truck.

Ian Dimitri23 Jun 2006 8:26 p.m. PST

Good Luck,

You probably already know this considering your time in the service, but when I was over there making friends with the local national interpreters will net you access to lots of stuff you might not other wise come by yourself or through your normal supply channels. Let me know if you need if I can send you any care packages while you are over there. If you are stationed at Bagram air field you will have plenty of access to the internet.
Take care,
Ian
