What is Urban Wars like? It isn't too much like GW's stuff is it? both in terms of price and play-style.
I'm not sure about collecting it, but it just caught my so i thought i'd check it out.

who better to ask than fellow gamers eh?

Thanks
Alexander

I wasn't really that impressed by the game. The order system seems rather odd and after a few test games I was left with an overall "meh" impression.

Nice minis (some of them…) but nothing to really get me jazzed about the game.

Urban War is a squad level Science Fiction game set in a big ruined continent city

It has human factions, a cyborg faction and an alien faction.

So my Viridians are a squad of Marines, with SGT, sniper, MArines and a LMG team. I could have lizard cavarly if I wanted.

Someone else might take Yakuza style criminals or Alien-esque aliens or Hideous Cyborgs or Space Russians with walker combat suits

Most games will have half a dozen or so figs a side.

It's not bad. You give your units orders. There are thre kinds which are resolved in order of speedyness.

Heroes have "CALIBRE" which can be used to boost actions and gain extra actions, but they tend to die as easily as others of their type.

The system is D10, basicially the same as Void 1.1. here are a few niggles with the nuber of rolls you might have in order to achieve things

Hero rolls to see if he gets his bonus

he gets his bonus

He attacks and hits

But he gets extra wounds

OK roll to see if cover got in the way

It didn't roll to wound

Now roll the armour save

But in general it is reasonably fast and fun and you can use proxy figs. My Viridians are actuallY from EM4, mixture of plastic and metal, and you can buy Void figs from Ebay

The order system is odd, but it does kind of make sense. When we ran it as a demo game we simplified the order system and combat resolution a bit for new players.

The newer minis are looking pretty cool…
Buy lots of them and use them in other games… like Kryomek using the SGII rules…

I love the minis and the rules. The orders system is quite neat, as is the Calibre system, allows your heroes to be, well, heroic! It's quite tactical, yet fun. Just make sure to get your guys into cover, and god help you if come up against a shock marine!

I like it.

The Order rules seem unusual at first but really do make sense and really make the game stand out.

We found it quite fun.

I am a big fan of the orders system. It makes thie UW system stand out.

The calibre system basically give you the opprotunity to take extra actions with your elite/heroic characters.

There is a little bit of a learning curve to it. I would not recomend this as your first foray into miniatures. Once you understand how it works the games go quickly and both players are engaged thoughout the game.

I fully agree with Warjack in that the Shock Marine is a headache when you run up against him. Our little group in on an Urban War break right now but I have been working on Oni's to try to counter these when get get started again.

Alexander The Pretty Good07 Jun 2006 12:52 p.m. PST

Thanks guys, very helpful. It definately sounds interesting so i'll check it out.

CmdrKiley07 Jun 2006 1:27 p.m. PST

With the core rules going for $8 USD and there's lots of proxy potential with the models, it shouldn't to hard to try it out.

One of the things that pulled me in was that I can mix my Warzone, Void, and Rezolution models with my Urban War pretty easily.

Panzer2107 Jun 2006 2:44 p.m. PST

How do the order rules work and can I use my imperial guard.

thanks

Basically, there's three orders –

Overwatch (like it says),

Snap Fire (quick actions, but not so 'focused', so shooting has a penalty, you can't run, etc). models with 'calibre' ie heroes and the like, have the possibility of getting multiple actions. This is the order used to charge into melee

Lock Fire – slowest of the orders, but with the best chance of whatever you try to do working properly – firing is more accurate than Snap Fire, a model can move twice as fast if it wants, etc.

You give each model an order at the start of each turn, then take turns working through each phase – Overwatch models just wait until the enemy runs out in front of them, then you alternate activating Snap Fire models. When they'rw all gone, you do the Lock Fire models.

You can proxy in Imperial Guard. Easiest to use them as Viridians; they have riflemen, snipers, missile launcher, machinegun and mortar teams, LMG troopers, lizard cavalry, spec. ops troops with SMGs and power armourd assault troopers.

You'll want Issue 0 for the core rules. Issue 1 is out of print, but available as a download from urbanmammoth.com and issues 2,3 and 4 feature new troops (issue 3 has the Koralon aliens and generic civilian militia, issue 4 introduces Junker convict legions and VASA paramilitary police units.

This was actually one of the other things that bothered me. There isn't a core rulebook and there were plans for one but I've not seen anything come of it. A single source for the rules would be a welcome change

AndrewGPaul08 Jun 2006 1:40 a.m. PST

Later in the year, IIRC.

Issue 0 is the core rules. All the subsequent issues add extra troops and the relevant special rules and equipment stats, but no additional gameplay rules.

the trojan bunny08 Jun 2006 9:25 a.m. PST

As others said the rules are in issue 0, the other issues are just new troop types.

And modeling tips, background and atmosphere fluff, scenarios, sample battle reports, artwork, etc…

The rules set is a little odd but once figured out it is a cake walk.

alien BLOODY HELL surfer11 Jul 2006 2:28 p.m. PST

All issues from 0 onwards are available for download from the website (thanks for the heads up yesterday Cowboy). I have just got to take them down to repro and ask them nicely to print me out a few sets in colour :-)
