Back at the beginning of March, when I was still a newbie, my first post asked what sort of crypto-freaks people would like to see in miniature form. I personally wanted Mothman…so I sculpted one myself!

Now, before you look at the pictures, please bear in mind that I have never sculpted anything before (except for dinosaurs out of Play-doh when I was a nipper) and I only used what materials I had to hand, which was a couple of paperclips, a rubber tap washer and some Milliput. My sculpting tool was a wooden toothpick (I'm so cheap…lol).

Be gentle with me, it's my first time…

You may not win any awards with it, but for a first attempt it looks good. I can't get a good look at the quality of the legs, but from a distance they look to be well sculpted. And the "fuzziness" looks good for the creature (though if you paint him orange, he would fit in well in a Looney Toons cartoon).

The wings need some more detail. I think checking out how bat wings are structured would help in that aspect.

That's pretty damn good, and looks just like all the drawings. Well done!

Not bad at all, Carrion. What's next on your to-do list?

Coyote Fezian09 May 2006 12:09 p.m. PST

Hmm, doesn't look a thing like the real mothman:

Seriously though, that could be a professional 1970-1980 (and even later) sculpt.

btw, the picture is of a Sand Hill Crane, which many authorities claim are responsible for "mothman" sightings. They say that their red heads can look like two big red eyes. They're big birds and one flying low overhead is quite and experience, I can say from my experience in Florida

Looks pretty good, simple but there isn't much you can do with the description of the Mothman. The way i look at it is there isn't one on the market so you have the best one available :)

And Rich, now i can't get Gossamer out of my head :( I think it needs a wing clipping and some sneakers.

Thanks for all your comments, guys. Just to put the figure into perspective, it stands about 30mm from foot to top of head and has a wingspan of approx. 70mm.

The pictures don't really do it justice, as they were quite rushed, so I could post. You can't see the leg musculature, kneecaps, buttocks or shoulder blades, which were quite fiddly, but came out really well. However, the best thing about it is that when I put it away at the back of the cupboard, all you could see was the outline and its eyes…

Once I've taken some side/back/with Bugs Bunny shots, I'll post them up here.

Carrion Crow, I like it!

Looks like something the evil Prof. Bellafonta would come up with to terrorize the contry and your pulp players.

Likes like the Professor is years ahead of his time with gene/DNA splicing.

It's a h#ll of a lot better than I could have done!

LOL!

I like Carrion Crow's better than Dances With Words' second example:

That looks like the legendary owlrabbit to me!

That Mothman looks just like the 'witness' renditions. Very nice.

I just entered the sculpting world too, because I wanted my very own Bigfoot. I used the old famous footage as my model.

Here she is…

I also did a Little Chupacabra too…
