As a tiger?
As a leopard?
As a lion?
Other?

And, most importantly, WHY?

Inquiring cavemen want/need to know. Thanks.

(You'll have to click on this one, but it's worth it for the cool white tiger paint scheme.)

Is this what you imagine a sabertooth looked like?

Here are more example:

I wasn't cherry picking anything that is just my normal standard of work on the figures and the vehicle was just a standard high street plastic kit which you can get from any model shop for about £6.50 GBP and these things sell in the tens of thousands year in year our for longer than I have been alive.

I still prefer 20mm for the modern rusky stuff as well

15mm has it's place and for me that is naps although the Bleeped text has sold em off to the aussies and they are now calling them 18mm which is about as helpfull as airfix lying about their 40 -50 year old Bleeped text being 1/72 now whereas for the first few decades they were 1/76????????

Dances With Words Fezian03 May 2006 4:41 p.m. PST

I gotta say it….'With a very, VERY LONG paintbrush'…or paintball guns from a very high perch….

jpattern03 May 2006 4:58 p.m. PST

And note that the paintjobs Cacique points to are the results of a quick search on my part; I did NOT paint them. (I wish!)

Rich Bliss03 May 2006 5:24 p.m. PST

ummmm , that's not my post above. I had one about painting sabretooth tigers to match the terrain.

arsienal03 May 2006 5:25 p.m. PST

Green with yellow stripes, of course!

As a lion. All the illustrations in the kiddie books I had showed it as a beast operating on the plains, or mountains. So, the tawny lion or cougar fur.

I can't imagine why I don't have one of my own… Easily fixed! 8^)

Covert Walrus03 May 2006 6:34 p.m. PST

Yes, most sabertooths were plains hunters like lions or such. Lion patterns, or cougar colourations are probably advisable.

Forest dwelling sabers are possible, though so lepaords are a possibility as are tigers.

I have painted a couple in different schemes.
I just painted up one with leopard spots
I have painted a couple with subdued tawny stripes

Patrick R03 May 2006 11:39 p.m. PST

I cheated and painted it black …

Area2304 May 2006 3:53 a.m. PST

As a siberian tiger. Or as Arsienal says. :-D

Why, because in my mind saberteeth(?) I would use would live in cold areas.

nazrat04 May 2006 5:22 a.m. PST

Like Zabu, of course!

The Demon Hunter04 May 2006 5:24 a.m. PST

I'd go with lion colors myself.

The Demon Hunter04 May 2006 5:24 a.m. PST

Yes, nazrat — like Zabu. I'd love to spend a few days in the Savage Land…..

artslave04 May 2006 7:43 a.m. PST

I have two sabre-tooths painted in tiger stripes. They are the old Archive figures I think. Not sure why I did it that way, other than they look cool. I have a third one painted to match a lion/cougar type colour.

Mulopwepaul04 May 2006 8:27 a.m. PST

I would wait until it was soundly asleep, and then start with a fake moustache and eyeglasses, I think.

Bombot04 May 2006 8:36 a.m. PST

So it looks like the majority of you use something approximating 20mm versus just a few who use 25mm?

This surprises me. I don't game WWII in 28mm but if I did I would have – without thinking – automatically gone with 25mm bases. I have loads of GW minis and they seem to do just fine on 25mm bases. The smaller size seems, well, too small to me.

Those of you who use something 20mm sized don't have problems with figures tipping over?

Bombot04 May 2006 9:17 a.m. PST

I actually only said I tought purple would be nice, like Skeletor's cat.

This bug is weird, man.

nazrat04 May 2006 9:32 a.m. PST

And it seems to be getting worse today. It's happening a LOT.

"How Would YOU Paint a Sabertooth?"

Very, very, Very, VERY carefully!!!!! And with a loooong brush!!! ;-)

<more serious> I've always have thought of them as thay are depicted by Frank Frezetta…..
picture

Although I can just as easily see them with "tiger" stripes, "leopard" spots, or even in an artic camo patterns like a polar bear or artic fox (afterall they were in the "ice" age).

Were there saber tooth tigers in those links?

Covert Walrus04 May 2006 8:19 p.m. PST

Actually, as a personal rant here, I'd like to see more variety in prehistoric cats – Where are the tailess Bearcats that preyed on mammoths, or the marsupial Thyloacosmilus of South Ameriac – Whose saberteeth had bony scabbards in the lower jaw for when not in use?

Not enough big carnivores for gaming, I say!

I would love these:

" I gotta say it….'With a very, VERY LONG paintbrush'…or paintball guns from a very high perch…. "

Hey it's yer life an' all but I think they'd probably throw you right out of the museum for that. And anyway, with my luck they'd make me clean it all up.

mattblackgod24 May 2008 8:37 a.m. PST

Personally I would go for Lion colours. But you cant beat a tiger stripey Sabertooth for fantasy games.

Cacique Caribe26 May 2008 8:08 p.m. PST

Norscaman,

Those Ligers looks fantastic!

I painted mine green with yellow stripes.
Why? Because He-Man needed his buddy, that's why.

Norscaman27 May 2008 6:03 p.m. PST

Cool huh! I really love them. They are my favorite animal… ;-)

But seriously, that is how I picture those cats. I can't get away from my childhood name for them "sabertooth tiger" nor my understanding of their habitat. Liger coloring means I get both!

Amazing critters!

"will someone make Leland some mutie pigs???"

Warren was working on those at one point, and making excellent progress. He might return to the project and get them done.

What if you were standing this close?

Would you care what color it was?

Covert Walrus23 Sep 2008 5:21 p.m. PST

Sure, CC. That close, it can't swing its head enough to get a good stabbing action – The way these beasts worked, judging form the teeth and the wear pattern on the skull and neck bones. And those fangs prevent a tight bite at close range . . .

Covert Walrus23 Sep 2008 5:24 p.m. PST

. . . And as a thought for a painting challenge – How about tortoiseshell?

Lion in the Stars24 Sep 2008 12:34 p.m. PST

and that overgrown sofa covering is close enough to introduce to Mr. Winchester, his friend Mr. Colt, and my insurance agent Mr. O.F. Mossberg.

What's that, you say? I can't shoot the beast that's trying to eat me?

rubbish!

Cacique Caribe25 Sep 2008 7:18 a.m. PST

I like this pattern:

This book has splendid pictures to use for painting (as well as good text):

I'm really liking the cats and other wildlife listed here:

When I finally get home I am placing an order for sure.
