Vostroyan Platoon.

Let me start by simply saying OMG, i'm being polite by missing out the 'F' but it's so hard to do ;)

Since I've got back into painting minis 2 1/2 years ago, nothing has got me so worked up and excited as GW's new Imperial Guard Vostroyan Minis, these are damn nice, not just nice but DAMN NICE.
Everything from the usual look of GW's IG units to the nice little extras that make these minis stand out from the run of the mill stuff that GW churns out on a regular basis.
Little things like the flap on the Plasma Rifle where the power cables come out, one of the Mortor Crew has his hands over his ears and a mortor straped to his back on his belt (as well as the loader holding one in his hand), the grenade launcher has an eagle hand guard, Some infantry men have Bayonets attached making for a real retro gothic look.
These minis simply ooze detail in every sense, like the part chainmail armour, the 'V' on the Sergeants chest, the "Hand Carved Wooden Stocks", the detail on the tunics and the syringe in the medics hand.
I would leave it there but then there are the 3 Casualties, not only do you get 3 of these stiffs but 1 of them has to be the goriest I have seen with his rib cage blown wide open, missing a foot and arm from the elbow both with protruding bone, painted up these realy can look a mess in the real sense of the word.
Everything and I mean EVERYTHING just shouts DETAIL and ATENTION TO.

So what do you get in the Platoon Box Set for your £50.00 GBP

1 Vostroyan Officer with Pistol.
2 Vostroyan Sergeants with Laspistols.
1 Vostroyan Vox-Caster.
1 Vostroyan Medic.
1 Vostroyan Las Cannon Team (2 men).
1 Vostroyan Mortor Team (2 men).
1 Vostroyan with Grenade Launcher.
1 Vostroyan with Flamer.
2 Vostroyan with Plasma Guns.
12 Vostroyan with Las Rifles.
3 Vostroyan Casualties.

So you could say thats £2.00 GBP each + 3 Free Casualties.
A BARGAIN.

And no, I DON'T work for GW, I just think these are great and deserve a post because as of late there are now GW NEWS slots (Unlike other Manufacurers).

veggiemanuk28 Apr 2006 3:01 p.m. PST

OK, that should be "No GW NEWS slots", Damn I thought i'd gotten away with no Typos. Grrrr.

Hyun of WeeToySoldiers28 Apr 2006 3:07 p.m. PST

Yep, got mine yesterday, am going to try to post some pictures and comparison shots on my website over the weekend.

As Veggieman said, these are lovely, lovely figures.

mweaver28 Apr 2006 3:32 p.m. PST

I don't care for them myself – a little too retro for me – but they are certainly nicely executed figures. I have the same reaction to the old Praetorian Guard/24th Foot IG figures.

Paintingploddy28 Apr 2006 4:48 p.m. PST

Seen them and they are ugly, ugly, ugly. From the stupid hats to the last brass fitting they aren't worth the metal they're made from.

Seriously I'm glad you like them, I hope you enjoy painting them, and that you get many years gaming with them. Sorry, no one will convince me I have to add these to my collection.

The sculpting is indeed beautiful and crisp; I just wish they could have gone with something a wee bit less reminiscent of the Nutcracker Ballet.

veggiemanuk28 Apr 2006 6:40 p.m. PST

mweaver, Same reaction to the Praetorian guard? would that be for or against them ;) (Zooloo with las rifles)

Paintingploddy, I wasnt trying to convince you that you have to have them (Look into my eyes, you will start to feel sleepy), just thought i'd do a review considering there seems to be a blanket ban on GW NEWS. (at the count of three, you will go out and buy a platoon of Vostroyans, you will love everything GW related and spend all your money) (1), (2), (3).

Space Monkey28 Apr 2006 7:02 p.m. PST

What ban on GW news is that?
In the past couple days it seems like I've seen several GW announcements… the White Dwarf, Black Gobbo, a gang of Mordheim stuff, and one more I don't care enough to go looking for…

That doesn't seem like a ban to me…

nazrat28 Apr 2006 7:23 p.m. PST

Until just recently GW has not been sending news to Bill at all, apparently. Somebody must have decided to start doing press releases again.

Wonder whatever happened to Tim Hucklebery. He used to be really good about updating Bill on GW developments.

Broadsword28 Apr 2006 8:01 p.m. PST

Information on the Vostroyan Platoon (26 figures) may be found at – link

They look well done, though Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite does leap to mind. Perfect for fighting those pesky Space Skaven.

nvdoyle28 Apr 2006 8:22 p.m. PST

Evaluation of technical execution: brilliant.

Personal aesthetic judgement: utter loathing.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik28 Apr 2006 9:25 p.m. PST

Don't like these at all. They're a poor rip off of Russian Cossacks, but then again so were the Kislevites in WH Fantasy I guess. I'll stick to my 2,000 point Cadian army; at least they look like they belong in the future.

mweaver28 Apr 2006 10:01 p.m. PST

Against, veggiemanuk. Nice models, but quasi-historical 19th century models with las guns doesn't appeal to me.

veggiemanuk28 Apr 2006 10:52 p.m. PST

Sorry if I got it wrong about GW news, but a number of months ago someone posted a complaint about GW News slots saying it was Advertising, there was no mention of any other manufacturer at all, just GW. Can't remember exactly the contents of the message but about around the same time the usual GW Updates stoped comming in, maybee I thought someone actualy took is to heart.

Spacelord29 Apr 2006 1:32 a.m. PST

I agree with the quality of execution- they look very well done, (though why on earth GW don't have bigger pics of their minis on the site I don't know), but I just don't like the design. A bit too wicked witch's guard from Oz looking for me.

I've just started a Tallarn/Kasrkin army though, so I'm out of the market for more IG minis.

WarWizard29 Apr 2006 3:16 a.m. PST

They also remind me of something from OZ, or maybe Flash Gordon. They are VERY well done but just don't suit my idea of 40K.

Cyclops29 Apr 2006 3:52 a.m. PST

Sorry, but I can't stand them and I usually love GW (figures, anyway). As already stated, the execution is superb but the concept is terrible. Another Russian based IG unit? Why? They could have went for an all female rgt, a heavy infantry rgt (carapace armour), a genuine Tech Guard regt (lots of bionics). I bet any of these would sell better than some retro russkies. The choices are endless. Why they went for these guys is beyond me. After the superb plastic Cadians these are a real let down.
And, being picky, why would a rifle have what amounts to a pistol grip? How would you aim? I know it's GW sci/fi but it just looks silly.

altfritz29 Apr 2006 5:43 a.m. PST

The Vostos are indeed the best 40K release GW has had in about 12 months – which is about how long it's been since I bought anything for 40K. Not that I'll actually be using these for 40K, mind you. I like these a whole lot better than those crappy plastic Cadians. Those goofy helmets they wear just put me off.

Personal logo Doms Decals Sponsoring Member of TMP29 Apr 2006 7:48 a.m. PST

I'll not buy them, as I have plenty of IG, but they are very nice. My army *is* Praetorian, for the record, albeit done in a snazzy blue and white Royal Marines style uniform….

Dom.

maxxon29 Apr 2006 11:27 a.m. PST

What's the world coming to when 2 quid per foot figure is a bargain?

I like these figures, and I really like their heavy bolters, but building a standard force of these is just too expensive :(

Maybe a kill team or a patrol force…

mweaver29 Apr 2006 1:32 p.m. PST

I quite like the new plastic Cadians, actually.

Mark Watson29 Apr 2006 5:34 p.m. PST

There's a fair choice of IG regiments right now, starting at expensive and going up (quite rapidly) to ridiculously expensive:

From GW
- standard issue Cadians, plastic + metal
- slightly less standard issue Catachans, plastic + metal
- Steel Legion, metal only
- Tallarn, metal only
- Vostroyan, metal only
- Valhallans, metal only
- Tanith First, metal only
- 13th Penal Legion, metal only

From FW
- additional resin Cadian
- resin Tallarn
- resin Elysians
- to come, resin Death Korps

From GW archive
- Mordians, metal
- Praetorians, metal

Most of the metal figures are well above £2.00 GBP per figure, bought direct from GW at least. I couldn't work out the Vostroyan design till I saw the latest WD, which has some designers notes – they very much fit with the latest John Blanche style of illustration, which feel like somewhat baroque stage costumes. The miniatures are basically those illustrations seen through the prism of Citadel's chunky miniature design.

Given the Cadian range, right up to the resin numbers from Forge World, I think that gets you the best range. I've got Cadians, Steel Legion and Tallarn, and though I like the new models, I'm certainly not up for another standard IG army.

I'd prefer to see a plastics range with more customization options than the standard Cadians – maybe choice of helmet designs, jump packs, etc. Then people would have a better chance to create their own regiments.

Der Krieg Geist29 Apr 2006 8:11 p.m. PST

I'm still waiting for GW to getoff their butts and do the IG from the old rule book picture.Guard in trench coat and closed helm ,stand ankle deep in the snow.Funny ring antena on back-pack.

BugStomper08 May 2006 3:57 a.m. PST

I think the Vostos look superb! But I'm resisting buying any because I just don't need another army at the moment (yes this can happen!) and I don't enjoy playing Imperial Guard.

Judas Iscariot08 May 2006 6:44 a.m. PST

Yet more evidence that 40K is just a Napoleonic game that is draped in a psuedo sci-fi scenery…

nazrat08 May 2006 1:05 p.m. PST

Here he goes again! Sigh…

Stepman329 May 2017 7:06 p.m. PST

11 years since the last post here…I just refound my love for the Vostroyans. I sold a sizable army of them a few years ago but now with 8th edition around the corner I'm redoing them. Though its a lot harder now as they are scarce. So if anyone has any they don't want, hook a brotha up…

Mithmee31 May 2017 4:18 p.m. PST

(at the count of three, you will go out and buy a platoon of Vostroyans, you will love everything GW related and spend all your money) (1), (2), (3).

I am not feeling it.

But then again I had a lot of build up hate against GW.
