What do you guys think about: Fast Play Rules For Napoleonic
and Crimean Wargames by Newbury rules ? are they suitable for 15mm and 20mm miniatures ?

Ancient. I had a set in the 80's (probably still have them). Empire was easier to play.

Do you mean the new 'Esprit de Corps' rules frequently featured in 'Miniature Wargames'?

The term "Newbury Fast Play" is either:
A) The greatest oxymoron in wargaming.
B) Proof that the British have a great sense of humor.

Started me out on ancients (about 12 years ago).
I now play Vis Bellica and Warhammer Ancient Battles.

So, the OFM and kawaski tried to play them too!

The Newbury fast play rules seemed to me to be the ordinary Newbury rules with only 100 or so factors instead of 300. What time you saved in not looking up the factors you lost in argument. They are `playable', but living is better.

I played Newbury's 'Napoleonic Warfare' rules through all four editions between 1974 and 1985. There were a bit slow, though in the end I could memorise the factors for all the tables and work the casualties out approximately via formula.

Taking six months over a single game put some people off, though.

I don't know about theses but I still like looking through the 19th Cent rules just to marvel at the sheer task that would be involved in trying to 'play' a game- extra quarter movement penalty for troops reloading, under fire while on left foot etc -I jest,of course.

Is there realy anyone who plays Esprit de Corps???
Maybe there are good ideas in it but couldn't get past page 10

I didn't have the "Fast Play" Napoleonics, but the Ancients ones. If I recall correctly, the primary difference between Fast Play and regular was the enforcement of the 20-sided die roll for fractional casualties versus using a roster. Might be wrong, though. Not at all what would be considered "fast play" these days.

I haven't played the 4th Nappies for a long, long time, but I remember actually liking them. Very detailed, very process driven, and mostly slanted towards "competition" games, but really not awful. Then again, I like Empire as well, so I guess I'm one of those.
