I have just received my first Ironclad Minaiatures Steam Tank.

Listed as Steam 4.A medium sized steam carriage with 4 wheels and Nordenfeld or Gatling gun armament. It comprises nine pieces cast in resin. All are crips castings with minimal bubbles or chips.

One frustrating thing I find on most resin kits is where there are multiple air pockets, particluarly on things like steam vehicles with lots of rivets. This usually results in your vehicle having missing rivets, or rivets with holes in. I am very pleased to say this is not the case with this kit.

It looks like it will fit together easily. A nice touch is the inclusion in the casting of wire supports for the wheels. My first impression wsa they would be very fragile, but on closer inspection noticed the wire axel running through the kit. A very good idea.

It is supplied with teh choice of either a Nordenfeld or Gatling gun armament. I really like the idea of the Nordenfeld a nice touch.

I will definately be ordering more of these and definately recommend them. I placed my order last saturday and it arrived yesterday. Pretty prompt service as well.

To me, one of the fun things about VSF is making or convering your own armored vehicles, whether from a 40K Rhino or a Thomas the Tank Engine toy.
However, not everyone is like that, and this looks like a fine kit.

I hate to be a donkey about this, and bray at "Ironclad Miniatures", but awhile back here on TMP, there was a fellow selling a Sci-Fi tank he'd built. The tank's treads were made from a plastic army men's tank, you know the one that comes in a bag, with about 25 green or tan soldiers.

Well from the treads up the tank looked to be an original design. The good people of this list though went and got a rope and hung this guy on these boards for being a re-caster!

Now far be it from me to point out that Steam Tank #3 seems to be a re-cast of Disney's "Atlantis" steam tank toy. The treads, for sure.

Where is the outrage for this re-caster? I like the design a lot, cause I bought 6 of those toys to play VSF with. I also had in mind to recast those same treads for one of my designs, but after seeing the outrage brought forward on these boards I quellshed that idea pronto!!!

I'm not saying it is a re-cast, I'm just wondering why there is no outrage here? Are VSF'ers different from sci-fi'ers? Do we not say anything in this case, ‘cause neat new VSF designs are hard to get? ‘Cause, if that's the case, I've got a box full of toy's to recast for VSF.

Where is the outrage? Prove it first, and then I will grab my torch and help you storm the castle.

Pistolier,

Before you want to start something that so many people are passionate about look into it further. Check out the link below. You will see only one similarity between the two and that is the track design. And i mean that there is one wheel larger than the other. Besides that there is nothing else to suggest that one comes from the other. :-)

These are nice models. I think they could be the base of amazing conversions.

Pistolier04 Mar 2006 1:37 p.m. PST

Ahh, OFM,

Am I to prove I have 6 Atlantis tanks or that the treads seem to be the same on both models? You're welcome to come over to the house and look through my collection anytime. Call first though.

will take you to a quick shot I did of one of my Atlantis tanks and compared it next to the add of the Ironclad tank.

Grimm,

I don't want to storm anyone's castle with a torch nor accuse a sculptor of re-casting I only know what my eyes tell me and they look the same with a couple of add-ons.

I just remembered what happened to the other Sci-Fi guy here on these boards without any comparison photos.

Hexxenhammer04 Mar 2006 4:09 p.m. PST

Same basic design, not a recast. There are many differences.

Nothing to make a federal case out of.

AndyBrace04 Mar 2006 4:39 p.m. PST

Well the Atlantis one has two large return rollers the Ironclad has two small ones, the Atlantis one has not got a boogie assembly, the Ironclad one has, and as to track the Atlantis one looks just like the tracks that are on the Matchbox FT-17 so who is copying who! I will pass the comments on to Mr John Lowen the owner of Ironclad (I am a personal friend and also game with him)!

It is a nice model that bears a slight resemblence to the Atlantis tank. Hardly enough to get worked up about. Andy Brace covered the details fairly well. Most any early looking tank model will have one of a couple of different sets of tread line ups anyway.

SBminisguy08 Mar 2006 2:36 p.m. PST

very nice looking. 20mm scale, I believe? Who does 28mm steam tanks, btw??

malamute09 Mar 2006 1:35 a.m. PST

DoctorX- these are 28mm.

CHANTYAM09 Mar 2006 5:37 a.m. PST

I'm glad that these have been well recived because I ordered three of the tanks last Friday.

CHANTYAM16 Mar 2006 5:27 a.m. PST

I might as well add my coments,my order came 10/03/06 and i can totally agree that the quality of the casting is spot on the only slight air bubbling (on the under size on the main bodies so not noticable at all).Steam 4 looks the part with a number of ideas coming to mind
"War-Wargon" (remeber that western?) in either 28mm or smaller perhaps leave off the rear boiler?
Add a "Steam Man" or "Steam Horse" as in the Frank Reade jr stories.
Steam 1 is ok as a small 1 man tankette and steam tank 3 is ideal and my fav of the bunch -thanks to John for the e-mail apologizing for the mistake in the order.

Kid Kyoto29 Mar 2006 8:12 p.m. PST

does anyone have pictures of these with some 28mm figures?

kahunna29 Mar 2006 8:50 p.m. PST

I ordered two Steam 3s and one Steam 4. The Steam 4 came with a broken track that was promptly replaced (Thanks).

It is an addiction. Sigh…..

I have three homemade landships, two Eureka Steam Chargers, a Parroom Station Steam Powered Armored Car (With GW Ork Steel wheels replacing the originals- they looked too modern for my tastes), a Brigade Games CSS Carapace, and a Wild Wild West Derailer tank that I'm going to modify with additional an additional turret.

And Gawd help me I'm planning to get more. Please please stop me.

I've got too many now to every use in a game.

Glad to have found this thread. I needed a small Steam Tank and the Ironclad one is perfect.

What ever happened to the debate on originality?

Mechanical06 Dec 2011 7:32 a.m. PST

I missed the date stamp and did some searching of my own. The track designs are similar enough that there may have been some inspiration from both Disney and the FT-17. However not enough in my opinion to call it a re-cast and certainly not enough to keep the Ironclad products off my want list.
