Since there seemed to be enough interest, we have started a photo journal showing the technique for making wooden waterline models of darkage longships. Chapter one is posted, and we will follow up with more if people like the format, and there is sufficient interest. It is an acrobat file, and takes you up to planking the hull. We have started three new ships as part of this project, and we will photograph the planking process to finish out the instructions. Please let us know how you like the format. This is the rough draft, but I figure it is better to get something out there for comments sooner rather than later. Dervel webpages.charter.net/dervel |

Excellent article. Yes, it might be a few weeks but I will be unboxing my bandsaw to give this technique a try. I like how you show the tools with each step and the tape measure for scale. The instructions are very easy to follow that way. Thanks!! |

I guess I might find myself making one of those in future, when/if I actually get to Vikings. Griefbringer |

Beautiful tutorial though because of lack of time and equipment, I could never do this myself. I already have a hard time painting everything I have to paint !!! But I would definitely be willing to buy a finished longship with that level of quality if ever you would contemplate selling them ;-) |

Tonights' additions to the photo journal include "How to re-build a longship". I've recived three ships back into the miniature drydock for re-fit. One was crushed by stacks of unpainted lead stacked onto it. One has the stearn broken and rear planking torn off. The third needed re-glueing and clamping. These are returning home to papa after a fellow wargamer has retreated to a extended care facility, leaving behind his collection. Soon, they will be battle-ready once more! If ya can make em, ya can re-build em too. |

The next installment of the photo journal is complete and covers planking the models up to and including extra details. Right now Dervel is writing captions and assembling the photos into PDF. This takes a bit, so patience, please. OK, now no more excuses. Time to send your miniature guys out into the forest to start cutting! |

Okay, Chapter 2 is being loaded as I type this from a bar in Berlin :) webpages.charter.net/dervel Sorry it would have been sooner, but I am on the road. If you have any questions on this please let us know. Basically we have given you enough information that you should be able to build your own ships. I hope everyone enjoys it. Thank Artslave for all the work, and blame his technical department for the short delay. When we get some time perhaps we can show the techniques we are using for Cogs. |
