Hesse Darmstadt Brigade

The state of Hessian Darmstadt joined the Confederation of the Rhine in 1806 and was rewarded by Napoleon by way of the expansion of its territory.

The state provided a Brigade for the Danube campaign and distinguished itself at Apern.

Gill states that GM Nagel's command of approximately 2500 troops was comprised of the Lieb Garde Regiment and the Lieb Regiment, along with an artillery element.

My understanding is they were split into two battalions each but I have decided to have two larger units than four smaller ones for tactical simplicity.

Piano figures have figures for these units but I chose to use the Hat Saxon offering as I could only obtain one box of the excellent Emhar Spanish infantry which are currently being painted up as the Lieb Brigade.

This meant chopping off the shoulder bags and replacing them with Hat Austrian backpacks along with various carvings.

The officers sashes are cotton thread wrapped around the torsos along with Greenstuff epaulettes.

I did find this lovely officer picture without epaulettes but went with the Piano variant.

The troops represent the Lieb Garde Regiment and I am quite pleased with them. The hats are a little on the large size compared to the Emhar chaps but I feel they have a charm.

I have yet to apportion artillery to the armies ( approximately 250 Austrian to eventually 150 French pieces) so will make a decision as to include the Hesse artillery arm later.

Lots to do.

Great stuff as usual, Chris!
You were lucky to find that box of Emhar: they have exited the market. 😟
