We've all done it. Spotted a bargain, bought a box of figures on impulse, acquired a set of rules that looked rather good, or embarked on a project that seemed perfectly reasonable at the time.

Sometimes it turns out to be one of the best purchases we've ever made. A few figures bought for pennies become the nucleus of a favourite army, an unexpected bargain opens up a whole new period, or a second-hand purchase turns out to be worth far more than we paid for it.

And sometimes… well, sometimes things don't quite work out that way.

The bargain box that spawned a ten-year project. The expensive rulebook that never made it beyond the first read-through. The army we bought, painted, rebased and then decided we didn't actually want after all.

My own worst purchase was an attempt to encourage a mate who loved the ACW, owned a huge collection of figures but had never painted a single one. So I bought a large pile of Rebs and Union troops, painted them all, and ran a few games. He enjoyed the games. I hated the period. He still never painted a figure. I eventually sold my ACW armies!

So, what's been your greatest wargaming bargain — or your most expensive mistake?

Any period, any scale, figures, terrain, rules or accessories. Tell us the story, and photographs of particularly splendid bargains (or particularly embarrassing disasters) are very welcome.

And if your better half still doesn't know how much you paid for it, discretion is entirely up to you!

Over to you.

My "current project" 🙄 started with a gift of around 100 painted Grenzers and Austrian hussars without horses. I had a bunch of "empty horses".
After the mandatory hurried Osprey et al purchases, I scoured Nibke Knight and eBay for more bargains.
Then someone here on tmp was dumping SYW figures, and I got over 400 for the cost of shipping.

Very nice story, but I'm still months away from actually putting in a game. 🙄

Hmm. Several mistakes involved buying miniatures and then realizing that critical troop types not only weren't in production, they weren't going to be in production anytime soon. In two of the three cases I can call immediately to mind, they were eventually added--but only after I sold my forces. (Not naming names because making miniatures is a rough enough gig without being raked over the coals for 20+ year old choices.)

I have had a few great bargains over the years, my biggest defeat was buying a bunch of Editions Brokaw 15mm WSS thinking I could do my project with them like I wanted, only to run out and not be able to source anymore. Flipped the project to Warlord 28mm……
