I will freely admit that I just don't like ancient or medieval figures with cloaks – mounted or dismounted. Why do so many ancient and medieval figures have cloaks sculpted on them? Nobody in their right mind would ever go into combat wearing a cloak. The hazards of wearing cloaks in combat far outweigh any possible advantages. All the sources I have read claim that cavalry wearing cloaks discarded them before battle or rolled them up behind the saddle. Infantry did something similar. With metal prices at an all-time high why bother with cloaks which use up a lot of metal? Why do sculptors add them to their figures? Have you ever tried to remove cloaks from metal figures? What a nightmare. Sculptors out there, please just have capes that can be glued on like Victrix and other plastic companies, or NONE at all. Please.

Watch any movie. In particular Game of Thrones. Every, particularly the hot chicks, wear cloaks, robes, gowns etc that are always dragged through the mud and gore. Make that make sense.

Same with backpacks and other equipment on Civil War figures. Why would you wear that into combat? They would rop all this stuff prior to the battle and then have a couple of soldiers from the regiment watch over it.

I like cloaks, They are fun to paint and look dramatic on the tabletop. I wargame the Northern Crusades in the winter campaign season for which cloaks were essential. Men on campaign spend more time not in battle than in and wouldn't want to risk losing their cloaks and freezing to death. Cloaks can also help men to conceal themselves and even a rudimentary form of protection. There are figures that have rolled up cloaks slung around the body, again in part for protection. Why would a man wear a burdensome greatcoat into battle? But many do, it became pretty much universal for the French in WW1.
