In the Great Raid the Comanches hit two towns, Victoria and Linnville. with different results. In both cases travelers outside the town and slaves in the fields were killed or captured, but at Victoria the townspeople occupied houses and fought, while at Linnville everyone got onto boats for safety, leaving the warriors free to sack the warehouses. Victoria had a fortified house with firing slits and a dozen people defended it. Once the raiders saw there was an effective defense they rode away. Looks like the presence of a safe refuge was the difference. Also the warehouses were full of goods on consignment and nobody willing to fight for someone else's property!
