Ads on television for The Creature From the Black Lagoon creeped me out. Also The Killer Shrews. I was too young to see any of these movies, but the ads on TV were quite enough, thank you.

Movies have never really caused any worry, at least not after 5 when I figured out family could be the real, and very tangible monsters. Horror movies elicit an "Isn't that cute" reaction.

The Blob. I had nightmares of that thing oozing up the steps to my bedroom.

Not a movie, but a TV public service announcement. A marionette educating us about Muscular Dystrophy-- creepy.

Jaws. Even our swimming pool was unsafe.

I also remember significant discomfort watching Romero's The Crazies, where haz mat suited goons gun down women and children to contain a viral outbreak.

Phantasm with the lobotomizing Golden Snitch.

Finally, the first kill in the original Friday the 13th haunted me for years.

None of these are particularly affective today.

When I was in the third grade, my teacher ask the class to write a report on what scared you. The local Chicago FOX affiliate showed old 50s and 60s scifi and horror movies on Sunday afternoons. I was addicted to them but some of them, particularly if it involved hideous, murderous mutants. I wrote that those movies scared me. When I got my graded paper back, the note on it said, "well, why don't you just stop watching those movies?" That never seemed to have occurred to me.

My family got the first pay movie channel in Los Angeles when I was about 7. So I saw all the classics growing up.

Exorcist
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Jaws
Halloween
Aliens
Dawn of the Dead
The Omen
The Day After

Gen X was famously unsupervised as kids.
