I fond some cool free STLs of ACW ships, I took a swing at printing some and they turned out rather well. I particularly like the Susquehanna. More here link

I'm about to do the same thing. I hadn't planned on printing masts— how durable do they seem? How did you orient them when you printed them? |

Looks nice! I printed up a lot of these years ago in resin. I own a Bambu A1 and am curious what size head you used? I'm guessing .20. Thanks. John |

The Gonk, face down with the yard-arms in contact with the print bed and minimal supports, I cut the boom off using the Cut function and added it afterwards with a bit of wire. They seem to be quite durable; better than lead but certainly not as strong as wire. John Leahy, .02mm hotend with the layer height set at .08mm and cheap Micro Center filament |

Good ideas. I did not see a scale that you were printing in. I have been eyeing the stl's that David Manley has been releasing. Which are reasonably priced. I will give some of these a shot in resin. Not holding out a lot of hope for the masts. I will need to try some different resin or a combo of them to get a mast that holds. |

Micman, 1/600 to go with my existing Thoroughbred boats. They aren't nearly as pretty but they cost pennies. FDM is more forgiving than most resins, but I'm still tempted to build masts from wire for durability's sake. I linked to the free STLs in the post on my blog. They can't compare to some fancier ones for detail but they are clean and come either with or without bases (and they are free) |

I bought a variety of diameters of stainless steel rod to do the masts, but I wondered about having AI just leave a guide rod path in the 3d printed masts I could stiffen with thin rod, rather that doing the whole thing in rods. Doing it all seems like the sort of activity which is really interesting once, the gets pretty tedious. |

The Gonk, I don't have the level of microchip wizardry necessary to handle that. I will just print out the masts and use them as a template for making the masts and yards from brass rod. In real life most steamships lowered their topmasts and yard-arms to prevent falling debris from injuring the deck gun crews. You are absolutely right about it being tedious. |

I have gotten some piano wire for masts for some WWI prints. I will try it with these. That is the scale I was thinking but I wanted to match up with the scale that is used in my area. |
