LOL! The "China plays the long game" trope is mostly myth—and the Middle East claim especially so. There was never a continuous unified China with multi-century master plans, and the PRC only dates to 1949, marked by sharp policy reversals and constant elite power struggles rather than consistent long term strategy. In the Middle East right now, China's supposed "long game" looks even thinner: its largest client state, Iran, is getting hammered in the war, while Beijing offers discounted oil purchases, dual-use parts, and diplomatic cover but refuses real military commitment, prioritizes ties with Gulf states over Tehran, and mostly just free-rides on US distraction. That's opportunistic hedging and regime-survival calculation, not some masterful multi-decade plot.

And let's not forget the bloody power struggles ongoing in China. I haven't tracked it for a bit, but Xi's faction is fighting other CCP factions and the fall out withing the PLA. PLAN, PLAF, etc is at least 3,000 Company and Battalion level commanders and ship's captains purged. Scores of senior leadship also gone, people who were on their Joint Chiefs of Staff, key planners and strategist, division and army group leaders, including close allies of Xi and of his competitors -- jailed, killed, or "unalived themselves."
