"While horror films have featured monsters such as semi-humans, ala Frankenstein, Dracula, and Hannibal Lecter, or even aliens or made-up monsters such as Godzilla, today, we ask you which movie monster based on actual critters is or are the most epic? Some to choose from include…"

My nominee is The Black Scorpion (1957). Scared me pretty bad when I saw it at 8 years old!

Second nomination for the carnivorous giant ants from Them!. It came out the same year (1954) as the original Godzilla. I also want to nominate the eponymous creature from the 1955 sci-fi movie Tarantula. It has a certain "creep factor" involving the unfortunate victims of the giant tarantula and the substance that caused its mutation. The Black Scorpion is also a great sci-fi movie from that time in the '50s, where there was a pretty good run of American-made kaiju flicks (although it wasn't called that here in the states).

Tarantula is also one of the first movies to briefly feature a pre-Rawhide appearance of actor/director Clint Eastwood.

I vouch for THEM as well. Like Alien, it was a 'B' movie with an 'A' cast. It was very epic in feel as opposed to the
cheesy close (inexpensive) environs that most genre flicks fall back on.

"Them" was a great film. My favorite line was "Make me a sergeant in charge of the booze."
