Prompt used:

I want to re-create the Battle of Maleme airfield using 3mm scale miniatures and the Fistful of T-34s rules. For this task, think like a grognard wargamer, keeping in mind that your wargamer friends and convention-goers will criticize your choices. Err on the side of historical accuracy when in doubt. If you hit a blocker then don't guess; ask clarifying questions instead.

Start by reviewing the attached game rules document. Pay particular attention to the section that discusses troop representation. For my purposes, use this number of miniatures for each platoon:

- Infantry platoons are 25-35 figures. Shoot for 30 figures, but the leeway is there to accommodate PicoArmor pack size. Include an appropriate amount of light machine guns to mix into the platoons, keeping the figure count at 25-35.
- Machine gun platoons consist of two machine guns with their crews.
- For Germans, determine if the platoon should have gliders. I don't want to buy/paint too many gliders so go with 2-3 gliders per Fallschirmjager glider-borne platoon even if that's historically inaccurate.
- Don't include any glider tow aircraft or paratrooper transport aircraft. I will start from the gliders landing on the ground.
- Tank and armored car platoons are 3-5 tanks. Shoot for 3 tanks, but, again, leeway is given.
- Artillery Platoons are 2-3 guns with their crews. Shoot for 2 guns. If you need a crew count for guns, go with 4-6 figures per gun (8-12 figures per artillery platoon).
- Trucks and transports should have 2-3 vehicles per platoon. Include 4-5 infantry in each truck/transport platoon for visual appeal.

Then review this historical battle: link
Then review the Niehorster OOB: link

Keep in mind this information needs to be mapped to the "Fistful of T-34s" unit specs.

The goal is to create a spreadsheet buy list of miniatures that represents: 1) the Allied land forces defending Maleme airfield, and 2) The German Fallschirmjager forces attacking the airfield. Come up with a force list, work out how many stands of what type will be required, and then give me a buylist for PicoArmor miniatures that will represent the forces in excel spreadsheet format. Include the following tabs in the spreadsheet: Overview, Allied Forces Miniatures, Axis Forces Miniatures, Aggregated Buylist, and Organization and Basing Guide. If you think of another helpful tab or two for the spreadsheet then include it. Research the PicoArmor packs that I will need and build the spreadsheet.

Claude's Response:
Eight tabs: Overview, Allied Forces Miniatures, Axis Forces Miniatures, Aggregated Buylist, Organization and Basing Guide, plus three I added — FFT3 Stat Lines (Derived), Proxies and Substitutions, and Scenario Notes.

The bottom line: 50 Axis stands (1,140 FJ figures, 20 gliders) against 63 Allied stands (1,442 figures). Core purchase $408.50 USD; optional extras bring it to $517.00 USD. Everything recalculates live — change a stand count and the buylist recosts itself.

Things you should look at before ordering:

The Niehorster chart is a GIF, so I couldn't read it directly. I used Wargame Design Studio's published reading of that exact chart instead — it gave me company/battalion structure, the six-HMG/six-mortar heavy weapons companies, and two formations the establishment chart omits: Braun's improvised staff Kampfgruppe at the Tavronitis bridge and Osius' signals company fighting as infantry. Both are in the list.

I put two Matildas on the tank stand, not three. Your guideline says 3–5, but exactly two were at Maleme and one broke down in Andrew's counter-attack. That's the detail most likely to get you corrected at a table.

Three real proxies, all documented with their accuracy cost: the 7.5cm LG 40 (O8 doesn't make it — IG18 substitute), the two 3.7-inch howitzers in 27 Battery (the other seven tubes were genuinely 75mm, and PicoArmor has the exact Mle 1897 under French artillery), and Cretan irregulars (British infantry painted as civilians).

The FFT3 stat lines are mine, not official. The free data sheets only cover Stalingrad — nothing for Crete exists in the free set. I derived each line by matching weapon class and showed my reasoning per row, but if anyone at your table owns the full FFT3 book, use their numbers.

One thing I decided rather than asked: I tiered the Allies into airfield core / wider sector / counterattack rather than picking a single scope. If you only want 22nd Battalion's perimeter fight, buy Tier 1 and the core drops to roughly $150. USD
