The above picture is part of my problem with ADLG. Nice painting but it doesn't really look like a phalanx to me.
Here is a picture of my 28mm Selecuid phalanx. Six large dioramic bases with 40 figures per phalanx.

Here is pic from the web of Baccus 6mm. Now that is a phalanx. I love the look of this scale even if I don't enjoying painting it.

@Marcus Brutus We agree with you… but to play tournament to see friends… it is the only way… playing AdlG or not playing… this is the question! 😉

One of the reasons we chose Sword and Spear over ADLG as an ancient's set is because we wanted to use dioramic bases. The visual effect is very important to us. With that said, if competitions were important I too would probably be playing ADLG.

Yes, competitions are important to Us… particularly to meet players and friends we've known for over 40 years for some of them!
However, we prefer the Field of Glory rules, which allow for larger units!

That certainly looks more impressive. I have been surprised how much better large single base units look to multiple base units. When we moved from Impetus to Sword and Spear I rebased my pike on to one stand units. The overall effect was surprisingly better.
