The American Volunteers were formed by Ferguson in New York with drafts from several Loyalist units including the New Jersey Volunteers, DeLancey's and the King's American Regiment at the end of 1779. It sailed south with Clinton soon after and stayed in the south until destroyed at Kings Mountain So here's my questions: 1) Do we know whether the loyalist regiments serving in New York issued new uniforms at the end of 1779 or were they still wearing their 1779 campaign uniforms? 2) Was there an issue of new uniforms to existing Loyalist regiments serving in the south in 1780? If yes were the American Volunteers among the units that drew new uniforms and if so when? The information I have suggests loyalist units in New York were issued new uniforms in the spring of 1777, 1778 and 1779 which in turn suggests the drafts of the American Volunteers sailed south in the 1779 uniforms of their previous regiments. The scant data I've seen on uniforms shipped to the Carolinas seems like it was intended for militia rather than for regiments used to wearing regimentals. |
