"Nothing kills the excitement of a tabletop battle quite like a lengthy rules argument. In my latest video, I explore some practical ways that historical wargamers can resolve disagreements quickly while keeping the game enjoyable. If you haven't watched it yet, you can find the full video below, but I wanted to expand on some of the ideas here because rules disputes are something I expect almost every wargamer has encountered at some point."

I have not seen knives drawn. Yet.
But I vehemently resent "some people" snatching the rules off the table to research where I was WRONG.

I've rarely had issues in games with most ‘issues' resolved with common sense. That said, my gaming group contains friends all of whom are of the ‘first stone the rules lawyer' bent.

There are a few people who always want to be "that guy." I just don't game with them anymore.

It's kinda hard to preselect your convention game players.

Exeter, true enough. The GM makes a decision and you move on.

We mirror McKinstry, it is a pleasure to play with a good group of friends,

Which begs a corrollary question. There are a growing number of "enclave" rules sets. Rules that tightly knit groups of gamers play, almost addictively. Bolt Action, ADLG, Saga, Flames of War and, of course, all things Warhammer. These gaming groups have superlawyered the rules, buffing out all the rough spots.

Anyone not ingrained with the community of a particular rules set who attempts to GM a session of any of these with hardened players is liable to end up like Kevin Bacon at the end of Animal House.

Games are for gamers, not lawyers, is my general view.

Games are for gamers, not lawyers, is my general view.

I have quite a few lawyers who attend my gaming day, and often invite them as necessary players in work games.

From what I've seen actual lawyers tend not to be "rules lawyers".

The solution: game with like-minded friends who care more about enjoying a friendly game than winning, and use simple rules that do not encourage differing interpretations.
I doubt that HG Wells or Jerome K Jerome had many arguments when playing Little Wars.
