The Austrian Empire was Napoleon's most implacable adversary. Austrian Infantry of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars is the first in-depth, accurate study of the Austrian Infantry during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.
Hampered by the conservative attitude of a large part of its military hierarchy, the infantry had to fight the most modern army in Europe. The regular regiments, however, performed with discipline and played a central role in the coalitions against France, from the campaigns in the 1790s, to the Austerlitz campaign of 1805, the closely balanced battles of 1809, and the final victorious campaigns of 1813–1814. Throughout this period, the Austrian military effort was founded upon the 63 regiments of line infantry and a wide variety of light units, ranging from the effective Jäger to the hastily recruited Frei Korps. Completed after an exhaustive investigation of the Austrian archives, including consulting many unpublished contemporary images, the book is lavishly illustrated and full of detail.
