Longtime fan of Arty's Tactica here. Is version 2 worth getting? Specifically: 1. Which would be easier for newbies to learn? 2. How different is the game experience with version 2? |

The original Tactica has less text so it would be easier to learn and teach. That said Tactica II is a better game. More detailed and rewarding to students of ancient warfare. A points system was developed to make pickup games a little more balanced. Like in the original Tactica plenty of diagrams to help explain the rules. 20 years in the making my friend and I were among the people who Arty had helping test it. I only play Tactica II now. |

I'm the friend of DFLange who helped develop Tactica II. There are some significant differences. In Tactica II the units start out deployed. There are no more maneuver columns like T1. Skirmish and Light Infantry and Light Cavalry can do an evade movement before your opponent moves first. Skirmish infantry (but not Light infantry) can support cavalry in melee but their support is limited to missile fire. It's a great game, especially if you like large ancient and medieval battles. |
