link Thomas is Harry's uncle who fights in the Napoleonic Wars and in India. I've not heard of him until today – 11 novels out already. My operational premise is that no one can top Fraser, but is Brightwell close enough? |

You are absolutely correct. Nothing can top Fraser with his feel for language, historical detail and the courage to give his protagonist out dated and, frankly, offensive views. However, the Thomas Flashman stories are rollicking good fun. Thomas is not quite the b*****d that Harry is but he is always looking out for himself. However, sometimes, he will 'do the right thing'. The language is not quite period authentic but the historical detail is good and the stories gallop along quite well. I would recommend them. |

Robert Brightwell is (at least for me) close enough. Like by MacDonald Fraser several histoical riddles are solved (for instance: why was Napoleon sick at Waterloo ? Blame Thomas ! |

I, briefly, was in a Flashman discussion group.
One of the members had written a novel about Flashman's participation in our ACW. 🙄
I pointed out the reasons why Fraser refused to actually write it, and why he instead hinted with "giant rat of Sumatra" anecdotes that would be impossible to reconcile.
Basically Fraser lamented the demise and slaughter of the best elements of the White Race in America. Yeah. He actually said that. And he was not about to write that book. The ironic thing is that Fraser basically "stole" the character and name from Tom Brown's Schooldays. He set the precedent that the name was up for grabs. Read the part in Flashman and the Redskins where Flashy discusses the book with President Grant. 😄
The guy didn't change the plot. He changed the character's name.
