For the first time, since ever, I have tried to bring some order to the military establishment of this Duchy. It has been a genuinely difficult piece of research, and I had to work my way back through the surviving sources—some extending as late as 1740—which ultimately proved extremely rewarding.

The uniforms will follow, although probably not all of them, as I am considering preparing a booklet containing the complete information and reconstructions. In this post, however, I explain—hopefully clearly—the research method and reasoning I used to reconstruct the army.

Thank you (again) for doing all this work of love ! I am looking forward to be able to order your (future) booklet – perhaps print on demand ? – and use the information on the 10mm WSS figurines of Belgian producer Van Dyck Miniatures vandyckmodelsandfigurines.be

Really nice figures and I have absolutely no relation (commercially or otherwise) with them !

Very thorough!
Do any modern Italian army units trace their ancestry back to any of these units? Some of the regimental names sound like things I've heard before, while reading about later conflicts/

Thanks Porthos. I will prepare the booklet, maybe even starting from Modena's Army.. I wonder the price. will see. I checked the figurines that seem quite good even if so little (just the French Grenadiers did not wear a cap but tricorne).

@Grelber. No thr Italian Army took its tradition only gtom thr Piedmontese Army (mostly from Ist War of Indipendance 1848-49) and this Piedonyese Army was the evolution of the Army of Victorious Amedeus II during WSS (for example the regiment Granatieri di Sardegna comes from Reggimento Guardie of 1700)

Awesome stuff. It would be interesting to generate a small campaign based around the Modena, Imperial and Papal forces in Comacchio, Ostellato, Bondeno and Ferrara.

Are there any resources available to indicate the uniforms fielded by the small Modena army?

@Prince, I agree. The units and arnies involved were quite little. It woul be also interesting the siege of Modena in 1708. There is no source for the Modena's Army. This is the aim of my (first, if you akk agree) booklet. I collected all what was possible, plus I am reading original sources in quite ancient Italian; I found some noyes written by handthat I am reading and putting together all the material. I will not publish all on my blog (too lobg effort). . my next post here will be about the Reggio Regiment

I definitely would love to purchase that booklet once it's available.
