Looking for a mat or two mats to fill an 8x6 foot table. I need texture, no purely flat neoprene backed mats with a printed image. I'm willing to invest a few hundred dollars for high quality ones.

If I absolutely have to do it myself, I'm guessing canvas drop cloth and silicone/sand mixture base is still the way to go?

Best desert gaming mat I've ever had I bought at a fabric store. Nice felt material, hills go nicely under it. A fraction of the price of "official" gaming mats. Here is a picture of it in the old west….

I suggest you look around….

And in the Sudan.

I did nothing to the cloth…the design is how it came….

That's awesome!!! Any chance you remember where you got it?

This is incredible. Definitely doesn't look like felt from a distance. I too would love to know if you remember where you got it, or if the fabric had a name.

Well guys, unfortunately I do remember. It was JoAnn Fabric. Who are of course out of business. The fabric was just on a bolt in the store….

Sorry for the bad news,

Dave

Michael's craft store picked up a lot of the old Joann's material. Depending on a throw of the die, it might be in stock where you are.

The Cigar Box desert mat is really nice.

I picked up tan felt.

One side sprayed two shades of green and some brown. I left some tan showing thru.

After dry, flipped it over and sprayed light and dark tan as well as some more brown. And, of course, left some original tan showing thru.

Works great.

Love the look of the fabric pzgeneral found

I use and am happy with the couple I got from Cigar Mat – both are double sided with grassland one one side and desert on the flip side

I have the same desert cloth as Pzgeneral. I use it for Ogre/GEV.

It's "Blizzard Fleece Tie-Dye Brown." They also have it in blue (great for naval games), green (bit too bright for natural plants, but YMMV), and grey (nice lunar surface substitute).

I got mine at JoAnn, but that chain is now defunct. They have been purchased by Michael's, and some joint stores are opening up as "JoAnn by Michael's." Alas, none near me that I know of. But the Blizzard brand might be an independent supplier with other retailers, so do a search.
